No more cute - with the change from Matiz to Spark, not only the name but also the visual appearance of the smallest C hevrolet series. From March onwards, the much more distinctive Spark will be available from dealers as a new entry-level model.

The Chevrolet Spark is bigger than its predecessor

Not only does it look more adult than its predecessor, it has also grown significantly - 14 centimeters in length, ten in width, two in height and just under four in the center distance. At the front the wheels (13 to 15 inches depending on the equipment) have been moved five centimeters outwards, and at the rear even seven centimeters, which benefits not only the look but also the driving behavior. The suspension remains with the class-standard combination of McPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam rear axle. However, an improved decoupling from the body should reduce the transmission of chassis noise. With a length of 3.64 meters, the Chevrolet Spark is still sufficiently compact for the city center and its tight parking spaces, into which the Chevrolet slips with its hydraulic power steering (standard) without the need for a laborious crank.

There is space for five people in the Chevrolet Spark

However, the bumpers, which are already painted in the vehicle color in the basic version, dispense with scratch-avoiding bumper strips. The parking beeper on the short but unclear rear end is only available in the top-of-the-range LT. Five people can go shopping in the Chevrolet Spark. Thanks to the standard rear doors with openers hidden in the roof pillar for optical reasons, you can get in and out of the car easily. However, they are not allowed to buy a lot, because the luggage space was left out of the general growth. With 170 liters, it holds no more than that of the Chevrolet Matiz, the variability is limited as before to split folding rear seats.

Fittings in motorcycle style

This is what the passengers in the interior stand fornumerous shelves for small items are available. The instruments are compactly draped behind the three-spoke steering wheel in motorcycle style and consist of an analogue, blue backlit speedometer and a digital display for showing the speed, fuel level and time. Both are combined in a silver-colored unit and framed by indicator lights. After turning the ignition key, four cylinders start working under the steeply sloping front hood. The gnarled three-cylinder from which Chevrolet Matiz has Obsolete, the entry-level engine is now its one-liter four-cylinder, which produces 68 hp in the Chevrolet Spark. Above that, the 82 hp 1.2-liter from the Chevrolet Aveo .

Instead of a diesel engine, conversion to LPG is offered

Both petrol engines are combined with a five-speed gearbox and each consume 5.1 liters per 100 km in the standard cycle - not a record in this segment. Chevrolet will not offer a diesel engine for the Spark, but will convert it to LPG, which will be available shortly after its market launch. The Spark takes another big step forward in terms of safety equipment. In addition to front and side airbags, head airbags are also part of the basic scope, ESP costs 300 euros, but is available for all variants, which is not common in this class. In the Euro NCAP crash test, it achieved four out of five stars.

The base price remains at the level of the Chevrolet Matiz

Despite the numerous improvements, previous Chevrolet Matiz customers do not have to expect a hefty price premium. The entry level remains almost unchanged at 8,990 euros. There are no electric windows or central locking in the basic Spark. Both plus a CD radio with AUX and USB connection are only included in the Spark + for 9,690 euros. In the LS for 10,890 euros, Chevrolet also supplies air conditioning, steering wheel height adjustment and 14-inch wheels. The more powerful gasoline engine starts as LS + at 11,690 euros and stands out with its roof rails, an on-board computer and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors. If you don't want to miss out on automatic air conditioning or aluminum wheels, you have to go for the 1.2 LT for 12,690 euros. Incidentally, Chevrolet has big plans for its smallest: It will be available worldwide - including on Chevy’s home market, the USA.
