C hery, according to own information China's leading automobile exporter is planning to start selling cars in Europe with a new model name in the next few years. The first model in the portfolio will be a compact SUV for young, trend-oriented customers in urban centers.

The Chery Exeed TX is celebrating its world premiere at the IAA as a near-series model. In addition to the new SUV, Chery will present the Tiggo Coupé SUV study and the TIGGO 5x and TIGGO 7 series models, two of the latest Chery vehicles for international markets in which the brand is already represented.

Exeed TX as a hybrid and electric SUV

The Exeed TX will be offered in Europe with three drive types: as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and an electric car. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will hit the market first. The PHEV is powered by a combination of a 150 hp 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine and 85 kW electric motor on all four wheels.

The SUV should go from 0 to 100 km in 6.0 seconds Accelerate /h and go 200 km /h fast. Chery indicates consumption at 1.8 liters according to the NEDC. The Exeed can drive electrically up to 120 km /h and can go up to 120 km /h. The battery should be able to be charged to 80 percent in 30 minutes via fast charging.

Well-known suppliers, 5-star crash test

Chery uses the know-how of well-known suppliers for its SUV. The seven-speed dual clutch transmission comes from Getrag, the four-wheel drive is developed by Dana and Borg Warner. In addition to the 7 and 10 inch displays, Bosch supplies parts for engine management and safety equipment. The tires, a body control module and parts of the electronic architecture come from Continental.

In China, the SUV has already achieved a 5-star rating in the NCAP test. Active safety is supported by assistance systems such as lane departure warning, blind spot and drowsiness warnings. In the event of an accident, the SUV calls for help.

Chery promises 'Quality according to European standards'

So that German and European customers are also interested in the Chery SUV the Chinese launched a major offensive which is intended to prove that “construction is carried out according to the highest standards”. The reason for this is the models from China that have performed rather poorly in tests in the past - such as the Brilliance BS6, which once completely failed in the EuroNCAP crash test.

'We have to make a very attractive first impression,' says He Xiaoping ,Chery Marketing Director. They did that - at least in the crash test: The Chery SUV received five stars there - top rating, also for the assistance systems.

In addition, Chery relies on comprehensive connectivity, for example: All common smartphone connections, i.e. Apple Carplay or Android Auto and MirrorLink are supported. WLAN is part of the standard scope of delivery, as is a large central touchscreen with real-time navigation.

E-SUV study with a range of 500 km

Chery is looking to the future with the Tiggo Coupé study . The coupé-like SUV is based on a new modular architecture. It is electrically powered and has an interactive steering wheel that can be folded up in autonomous driving mode and used as a game controller. The 120 kW electric motor accelerates the Tiggo Coupé from 0 to 100 km /h and further up to 200 km /h in seven seconds. The lithium-ion battery should be able to be charged to 80 percent of its capacity in 20 minutes. According to Chery, when fully charged, the electricity is enough for up to 500 kilometers.

Well-known suppliers for Chery's first European car

For its suppliers, Chery relies on European and, above all, German know-how . The LED headlights come from Hella, Continental supplies control modules for the on-board electronics and the tires for the Chery SUV. The all-wheel drive comes from Dana and BorgWarner, the transmission from Getrag. These measures are important for Chery in order not to be pushed into the cheap corner.

To underline their ambitions, the Chinese are planning to set up a European sales center. In addition, there will be new design, research and development facilities in Europe. In addition, hybrid models with and without plugs as well as pure electric cars in various segments are to come to Europe in the coming years and build on a new modular platform.

In terms of connectivity, the Chery models are to set new class standards, however, the Chinese also want to focus on high product quality, low-emission or zero-emission drive technologies and an emotional relationship with customers.

A leading Chinese automobile manufacturer

20 years ago, Chery started in a small garage . Today Chery is China's most successful vehicle exporter. Since the company was founded, more than 1.2 million vehicles have been sold abroad. Chery is also the first Chinese manufacturer to sell over six million vehicles. The company has held the title of leading vehicle exporter in China for 14 years in a row.

In 2016, sales of the Chery Group were over 700,000 units, 28% higher than in the same period of the previous year. Around 100,000 of them were sold abroad - a figure that accounts for almost 30% of all Chinese vehicle exports.

Chery has sufficient production capacities to meet ambitious goalsof the company in Europe. In four plants in China, the company can produce more than one million vehicles, around one million engines and around 600,000 transmissions annually. Outside of its home market, Chery has ten production facilities as well as a sales and workshop network with around 1,200 contact points, compared to over 500 dealers in China.
