V four-cylinder engines, whether as in-line engines or boxers, are the automotive standard . Six-cylinder, V-shaped, in-line engines or boxers are also widespread. V8 and V12 units characterize the luxury drives in the luxury class. Two- and three-cylinder are just about to collect points at the bottom of the engine hierarchy. Five-cylinder units, predominantly in-line design, tend to lead a life on the sidelines, but were always found in very special models.

Who does not know the typical 'crackling' of the Audi five-cylinder in the Quattro -Rally models. Heard once, never forget. But why five cylinders? The smoothness of the five-cylinder engine is somewhere between four- and six-cylinder. In terms of overall length, the five remain under the six, which still allows transverse installation. Five-cylinders thus form the golden mean or simply the best compromise and are therefore the ideal niche product.

The first five-cylinder in the passenger car segment was the OM 617 developed by Ferdinand Piech for Mercedes, which was launched as a three-liter diesel from 1974 im /8er was used. As the 250 D, the five-cylinder made a career in numerous Mercedes model series from 1986; from 1989 the five-cylinder was also available as the 290 D with a displacement of 2.9 liters. For the finale from 1999 onwards, the five-cylinder engine with a 2.7-liter displacement appeared as a 270 CDI. The highlight was the AMG diesel in the C30 derived from this, with a displacement of three liters and 231 hp.

Audi with a great five-cylinder history

But the most intimate connection with the five-cylinder concept is called Audi after. The Audi 100 5E was presented as early as 1976, followed by the Audi 100 5D with diesel engine in 1978. The five-cylinder became a hit with the Audi Quattro from 1980. After a long break, Audi rummaged the five-cylinder out of the moth box again in modern times. With a displacement of 2.5 liters and turbocharging, it can currently be used in numerous sporty models.

Five-cylinder units were also found in the portfolio of the car manufacturers Fiat, VW, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Volvo and Ford in various Volvo models goes back to the Audi TDI. The petrol engines, which the Swedes developed themselves, later found their way into the engine compartments of various Ford models. The Fiat five-seater was installed as a diesel and gasoline engine in all subsidiary brands and made, for example, the 1996 Fiat Coupé with 220 hp the fastest Fiat of all time.

Volvo holds the rod for the five-cylinder

Five cylinders, however not in the classic in-line but in VR design, were treated by VW for various models. The VR5 worked in the Golf, in the Bora, in the Passat but also in the Seat Toledo. In the VW T4 and VW Touareg, in turn, five-cylinder in-line engines were installed.

Currently, however, Volvo is one of the biggest proponents of the five-cylinder. The Swedes have almost in each series currently has a five-cylinder engine. Even the Volvo 850 could only be ordered with five-cylinders from 1991 onwards.
