D he is serious about Cadillac: after decades of 'slumber' , in which rather old-fashioned vehicles with not always unequivocal workmanship are increasingly falling behind, even on the home market of the USA, is now being massively upgraded, rejuvenated and improved. The most recent example are the sports models ATS-V and CTS-V, which are confidently positioned on an attack course against potent sports sedans from European premium manufacturers. The XT5 is now the next vehicle to follow this strategy. It replaces the Cadillac SRX.

Cadillac XT5 chasing Mercedes GLE

The new Cadillac XT5 is just the beginning, Cadillac plans to launch five new crossover models in the near future bring. Despite the growth compared to the previous SRX, the Cadillac XT5 is an SUV with Europe-compatible dimensions: 4.8 meters long, 1.9 meters wide, which is pretty much in the class of a Mercedes GLE. Cadillac also targets it by name and reports that the new XT5 is 295 kilos lighter than a comparable GLE. The Cadillac data sheet reports 1,940 kg for the all-wheel drive XT5, 1,814 kg for the front-wheel drive model.

The standard engine is the newly developed 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine, which is used in the Cadillac XT5 brings 310 hp and 366 Nm of torque. An eight-speed automatic is flanged on, the Cadillac XT5 will be available with front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The wheelbase grew by five compared to the SRX, the track width by 2.6 centimeters.

Cadillac XT5: China in focus

Compared to the predecessor SRX, the legroom in the second row should be increased noticeable eight centimeters, especially important for the Chinese market, which Cadillac is clearly focusing on with the new XT5. A two-liter turbo gasoline engine is also to be offered for China. How important the Middle Kingdom is for Cadillac's expansion schedule is also shown by the production locations: Assembly will take place simultaneously in the USA and China, from spring 2016.

The Cadillac XT5 is officially offered as a five-seater, However, the layout of the rear bench makes it clear that this is more of a 4 + 1 seating. One of the technical highlights is a new reversing camera system, which, according to the manufacturer, provides a 300 percent larger viewing angle than a conventional interior mirror: the image from the reversing camera is shown in a display in theInside mirror is projected, accordingly no columns or window cutouts can be seen in the picture. How well the lens is protected against dirt will have to be proven in practice.

Cadillac XT5 from 48,800 euros

The interior is dominated by leather, which is also stretched across the dashboard. There are five interior colors to choose from. Cadillac supplies the XT5 as standard with a Wi-Fi hotspot for Internet access, a tray for wireless charging of mobile phones and a compatible system for using Android Auto and Apple Carplay. All of the assistance systems commonly used in this class today are of course on board, but the LED headlights cost an extra charge.

The unavailability of a diesel engine continues to be a problem for the new Cadillac XT5 in Northern Europe - at Lexus they can do a lot sing about it. But the big business with vehicles in this category is done in completely different markets anyway. The new Cadillac XT5 will succeed the SRX in Germany from September 5th. The XT5 is available from 48,800 euros.

Seat test Cadillac XT5

With the XT5, Cadillac finally wants to win over customers of the German premium brands in Europe. Can this really work? On its debut at the LA Auto Show, the new SUV makes an amazingly good first impression. The interior - in US cars often clad in loveless hard plastic - makes an extremely high-quality impression in the XT5 and operation is also problem-free. The tight seats offer good lateral support, and the rear passengers even have more space than in the longer SRX. Homework done! The new reversing camera with high screen resolution has to help with maneuvering because the all-round view is modest.

In terms of connectivity, the Cadillac SUV is already at the forefront. The XT5 has 4G WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as inductive charging for smartphones.

Conclusion: The Cadillac XT5 is a very attractive car that is technically and qualitatively better than its predecessor. It's a shame that it will only be available from us as a gasoline engine - it will probably remain with a small but fine fan base in the future.
