BMW Megacity - US plant builds carbon fiber parts
Subscriptions & booklets
The reduction in weight is considered to be an absolute must if the Megacity Vehicle is to be a success. In BMW’s opinion, this is the only way to ensure that the car can travel sufficiently on one battery charge. The Munich-based company wants to get the completely new vehicle concept on the road before 2015.
The megacity should be built in Leipzig
The environmentally friendly vehicle is to be designed for use in large cities and will be produced in the BMW factory in Leipzig roll.
BMW and SGL chose the US location, among other things, because of the high energy consumption in fiber production. The electricity in the region is generated from hydropower and is cheap. In addition, there are many carbon fiber experts around Seattle. The neighboring Boeing group has been using carbon fiber more and more in its planes for some time, especially in the new 787 Dreamliner.
B MW and SGL are investing around roughly 100 million dollars in the plant and want to create around 80 jobs. The carbon fibers are woven into mats in the second joint plant in Wackersdorf, which in turn are shaped in the BMW component plant in Landshut. The final assembly of the car will take place in Leipzig. BMW and SGL announced their cooperation back in October of last year.
