S Are you a style-conscious guy? Someone who pays more attention to how they dress, who carries a smartphone in their pocket, prefers a certain watch label and, above all, knows exactly what they want when it comes to cars - namely a touch of extravagance? Then you are right here. The BMW managers do not want to lose sight of these customers, who have made the brand the number one premium manufacturer. Therefore, the series will be split even further. 3 Series drivers who have long wanted to get out of the business and rental car monotony will have the opportunity with the more individual BMW 4 Series to differentiate themselves more clearly from the automotive crowd.

In the spring of next year it's already going - then the BMW 4 Series Convertible and Coupé are about to go on sale. They are of course based on the technology of the new 3 Series, but are a little longer, wider and above all flatter. If you like the sporty note, you will find it here, with the sideline extending horizontally to the rear. BMW has done without a steeply sloping rear, as is often found at Mercedes at the moment.

BMW 4 Series is the only premium convertible with a tin roof

But not the convertible's variable hardtop, that folds into the flush top compartment - incidentally, BMW is the only brand that offers a convertible with a tin roof in the premium segment. That could also please individualists. From 2014, analogous to the 6 Series Gran Coupé, there will also be a four-door BMW 4 Series with the same type designation, which should appeal even more to 3 Series drivers with a sense for the special and an acceptable amount of space.

That the whole thing is technically With adaptive chassis, head-up display, sports steering, all-round camera surveillance, lane change warning system and all-wheel drive, it is clear. The engine range of the BMW 4-series models primarily consists of turbocharged four-cylinders, while the top models 435i (306 hp) and 435d (286 hp) have a six-cylinder under the hood. The Active Hybrid as in the 3 Series, however, is not intended. This version, which is currently only intended for the notchback model, should succeed primarily in the USA anyway. In this country, BMW will concentrate more on the plug-in hybrid, which will come onto the market in 2014/15 and which will enable up to 30 kilometers of purely electric driving.

Around 40,000 euros base price for the BMW 4 Series Coupé

And what does this excursion cost in higher3 fields? You should expect a base price of around 40,000 euros for the BMW 4 Series Coupé, based on a 420d with the two-liter engine, which would put the premium over a 3 Series sedan at around 4,600 euros. Individuality has its price - this also applies to the BMW 3 Series GT, which also comes in 2013 with a raised seating position and a variable interior. The price difference between the 5 Series and the GT is 6,200 euros, so that between 3 and 3 Series GTs there should be at least 4,000 euros. Cheap is different, as the BMW i3 e-car shows from the end of 2013 at prices just under 40,000 euros for the four-door. The coupé, which will be shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, should be significantly higher.

If all this is too much for you, you will find it at Mini from next year. The new generation based on the 1 Series Van is available from around 16,000 euros. A BMW 4 Series or two Minis - which do you prefer?
