D he decision between the two could quickly go through the elementary question : 'Rear or front wheel drive?' be clarified. For those of you who do not worry, we compare the facts:

Audi A3 from 21,600 euros, BMW 1 Series from 21,900 euros

With the market launch, the Audi A3 will be with it give the 1.4 TFSI (122 PS) from 22,500 euros. A 1.8 TFSI with 180 PS and a diesel engine with 2.0 liter displacement and 150 PS will also be available for the market launch. A new entry-level variant will be available in the fall and will cost from 21,600, and a 1.8-liter vacuum cleaner and a 1.4-liter petrol engine (around 140 hp) with cylinder deactivation, as well as a 1.6-liter, will also be available in the fall -Diesel to follow. Those who can wait until next year will - thanks to the modular transverse matrix - also have a natural gas variant to choose from; A plug-in hybrid is even expected to come in 2014.

With the market launch of the new 1er 3-doorer will also introduce the new entry-level 114i engine in September. From a displacement of 1.6 liters, it provides 102 hp, the price is 21,900 euros. BMW is juxtaposing the 1.6- and 2.0-liter diesel engines of the new Audi A3 in the new 1-series three-door model with the 116d, 118d and 125d - all three performance levels with a displacement of two liters.

Dual clutch transmission versus eight-speed automatic

The manual transmission comes from Audi A3 and BMW 1er basically with six gears . However, there are notable differences on the automatic front: while the S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission from Audi has seven stages, BMW is introducing a new feature in the compact class with the eight-speed automatic.

In addition to the engine and transmission, could still suitability for everyday use be a decision criterion ... or not. The trunk volume, for example, only differs by five liters - 365 liters fit in the A3 and 360 liters in the 1 series; a maximum of 1,200 liters should fit in for the 1 Series, and around 1,100 for the Audi. A look at the dimensions does not reveal any major differences either: The new Audi A3 measures 4.24 meters inin length, 1.77 meters in width and 1.42 meters in height. The new BMW 1 Series packs another eight centimeters in length, because the longitudinally installed engine and rear-wheel drive need space. It is identical in height and width to the new Audi A3.

Audi S3 Quattro and BMW M135i xDrive

Speaking of drive: rear-wheel or front-wheel drive? Still can't answer the question? Maybe that's because you kept your eyes on the top of the range of models. Here we see the Audi S3 and BMW M135i - and the relativization of the question of the drive. Because the new Audi S3 will also be equipped with all-wheel drive as standard; You can choose between manual and automatic transmission. Also ex works in the new S3: The 280 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit. The market launch is scheduled for the beginning of 2013.

The BMW M135i will be available with a 320 hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit from September. With rear-wheel drive and manual six-speed gearbox, it costs from 39,850 euros, with eight-speed automatic it will be at least 42,170 euros. And from November the new BMW 1 Series will be available as the M135i xDrive with all-wheel drive. Then the eight-speed automatic sports transmission is standard equipment and a base price of 44,000 euros.

It gets a bit quiet about the S3 . ... but only until the Audi RS3 has also brought the generation change behind it and most likely provides 350 hp with the new 2.5-liter turbo five-engine, including all-wheel drive and dual clutch transmission, of course. But that will take a while, because the RS3 is not planned for 2013.

And what does the new BMW 1 Series say? He stays out of it and sends in the unlifted BMW 1 Series M Coupé - with six cylinders, 3.0 liters displacement, turbocharging, 340 hp and rear-wheel drive. Drive, drive, ... there was something ... Oh yes! Would you prefer front or rear wheel drive? Still can't decide? Then wait and see what compact cars will come onto the market in 2012: the Volvo V40 , the Mercedes A-Class and the end 2012 also the VW Golf VII . Yes, no one said that making decisions would be easier.
