A However: from 2019 the tax relief will be reduced by 20 percent annually until the end of 2022. Accordingly, LPG drivers will have to pay the full tax rate from 2023. LPG currently enjoys a tax advantage of 15 cents per liter, the price per liter is currently between 50 and 60 cents. Around 480,000 vehicles in Germany currently use LPG. Only around 100,000 vehicles use natural gas.

In contrast to LPG, the tax advantages for natural gas (CNG) for use in transport have been extended. They will continue to run until 2026, but will be melted from 2024.

Originally, the Federal Cabinet wanted to completely abolish the tax advantage for LPG from 2019 in a resolution on the Energy Tax Act passed in February. That would have put an additional billion euros in the federal government's cash register.
