'Our customers should receive top service throughout,' said Audi Service Manager Dietmar E. Schnepp after the 2010 workshop test in which the premium manufacturer was by no means convincing with a troubleshooting rate of 75 percent. There was no sign of any improvement in 2013, rather the pendulum swung down another four percentage points. Instead of delivering top performance, four out of seven authorized dealers get the rating 'recommendable' and two with 'conditionally recommended'. For the Audi center in Mainz, the rating is even 'not recommended'.

Light setting problematic

Only At Auto Wichert in Hamburg, the headlights are correctly adjusted, the loose cover plate is only registered by the fitter at the best company in this year's Audi round, the Leypoldt Auto Center in Filderstadt near Stuttgart. The ATU branch in Berlin tested for comparison cannot convince in terms of work performance either. Only the inspection price is around 63 euros lower than the average of the seven Audi companies tested.

The prepared defects on the Audi A3

Before the car is handed in for inspection, auto motor und sport builds seven defects into the vehicle. All errors such as misaligned headlights, a too low cooling water level or a defective horn must be found by the mechanics while working through the maintenance plan and corrected professionally.

How the customer is treated

The first contact between the new customer and the Service staff in the spacious car dealership near Stuttgart Airport is positive, although all parking spaces in front of the entrance area are full. The service assistant records all relevant vehicle data and creates an order confirmation. Then she asks us to inspect the A3 together with the service advisor in a sparse direct acceptance box. He discovers that the cooling water level is too low, as well as the defective horn and a blocked nozzle for the rear window wiper. However, he gives himself up very early in the morningtaciturn. The whole procedure only takes a quarter of an hour. Six hours later, a call comes in that the car will be ready at 2.45 p.m. When collecting the goods, the service advisor will point out various defects that he noted on the invoice. We have to sign to have the screws on the aluminum wheels retightened after 50 kilometers.

The work done

Checking the quality of work shows that the right headlight continues to shine inwards. That costs the dealership three points in terms of the quality of work and thus the rating 'highly recommended'. For this, the billing reference for the low cooling water level is exemplary: 'We have not found any leaks, please observe.' During maintenance, the mechanic does not hide the fact that the breakdown compressor is not on board.

The costs

The inspection price is comparatively low at 287 euros. A reference to the oil change and the filled lubricant at a price of 26.60 euros per liter is nowhere to be found. It is difficult to understand that windshield cleaner was said to have been poured into the brimming water container at a price of five euros. So it is little consolation that the Audi A3 is washed free of charge as a 'special service'.

Autohaus Weeber, Leonberg

Test result: recommendable

How the customer is treated

The acceptance at the large dealer on the outskirts of Leonberg is relatively unspectacular. After the service advisor has covered the driver's seat and steering wheel with plastic sheeting, he takes the car onto a lifting platform. During the rapid run-through, he registers the full water tank for the windshield cleaning system, but the too low cooling water level escapes his trained eye. To do this, he advises that the windscreen wipers should be lubricated and replaced. Ten minutes later he completes the order and informs us that a timing belt change and a brake repair are due soon. With the words 'May I ask you how you came across our business?' he says goodbye to us until the next day. Just in time for the pick-up date, the A3 is freshly washed in a parking lot in front of the entrance.

The work done

Before payment of the invoice amount, the foreman goes into detail about the scope of maintenance and various items. He also points out repairs that are due soon, which he notes on the invoice. The scope ranges from the missing mounting bracket for the battery to the broken bracket for the fog light. He explicitly mentions that when checking the cooling system, there is a leak in the radiatorfound. However, Weeber missed a top result because the misaligned headlights and the loose cover plate were not registered.

The costs

Cash fillers are missing from the invoice, but 20.33 euros are charged for installing and removing two wheels as part of the brake system check. The cooling system is tested without calculation. Even with a price of 23.90 euros for a liter of motor oil, the Leonberg dealership pulls itself out of the affair comparatively gloriously.

Audi Center Hamburg, Hamburg

Test result: recommendable

How the customer is treated

The service area is easy to find in the large dealership, there is no lack of parking. The service advisor takes 45 minutes for the direct acceptance and immediately registers that the cooling water level is too low: 'You should watch that.' He also noticed the torn fastening of the tank cap, the insufficient air pressure in the emergency wheel and the defective horn. 'If it's just the fuse, we'll fix it, otherwise we'll call you back.' He briefly inquires in the workshop about the pick-up date. Finally, he asks if we would like something from the Audi accessories range. When asked what he could offer, he mentions floor mats.

The work performance

However, it is not quite enough for an impeccable performance, because the light is turned off during the inspection not set correctly. The right headlight shines too far outwards and the fitter overlooks the loose cover plate on the underbody. Otherwise, the quality of work is no reason for complaint. Pending repairs that can be carried out later are meticulously listed on the maintenance list. The spectrum ranges from smeary wiper blades to a missing pollen filter cover to the expiry date of the first-aid kit. The A3 is picked up quickly. The foreman briefly explains the maintenance work that has been carried out, walks with us to the car parked directly in front of the acceptance area and wishes him a safe journey. That's it.

The costs

The invoice shows that the cooling system has been checked and no leaks can be seen. For this activity, which various other Audi dealerships carry out free of charge, 29.17 euros are billed, with a further 15.09 euros for the repair of the horn. The water box is cleaned free of charge and there are no cash fillers on the bill.

How the customer is treated

The dealership was difficult to close because of a major construction site to reach. The navigation system in the support vehicle initially leads us astray, and even locals have no tip on how we can best reach the company. But we arrive at the dealership punctually at 3 p.m. The service advisor still has a customer, so it's not our turn until ten minutes later. During the inspection, he points out little things and registers that the cooling water level is too low: 'I'll squeeze the container.' He mentions 10 p.m. as the pick-up time because three fitters are available for the evening hours. But that's too late for us.

The work done

At around ten o'clock the next morning the car is thanks a free 'thank you wash' freshly polished and locked in front of the entrance area. However, nothing can be seen of a service advisor during the pickup. An employee jumps into the breach and briefly explains the bill. She informs us that the compressor for the tire repair kit is not on board and that the battery cannot be tested. When checking the quality of work, it turns out that five of the seven prepared defects, including the headlight setting, were correctly repaired. However, the fitters overlooked the detached brake line and the loose cover plate.

The costs

The total price of the comparatively low 375 euros estimated for the delivery of the A3 is only just under exceeded two euros. However, the Wichert dealership is at the top of the Audi dealerships with an inspection price of 339 euros. One reason for this is the high price of oil, because a liter of Longlife 3 costs an impressive 34.93 euros. To compensate, there are no additional costs for checking the cooling system and troubleshooting the defective horn.

Autohaus Gessner & Jacobi, Hanover

Test result: conditionally recommendable

How the customer is treated

Despite the city center location, the parking facilities in the older but renovated car dealership in Hanover are sufficient. The service advisor, who is present on time, inspects the A3 thoroughly on the lift and records the defective horn and a brake fluid service on the order confirmation. Almost 15 minutes later he announced by phone that the brake fluid was only changed at the end of 2011 and was therefore not necessary. One hour before the agreed pick-up date, we received another call that the handover would be delayed by one to one and a half hours, because the newly installed fuel filter was leaking and after being replaced onefurther test drive would be necessary. Finally the redeeming call comes that the car and the bill are ready.

The work done

At the The foreman is present for collection, but delegates the explanation of the maintenance list and the invoice to an employee. He only notices that he did not change the brake fluid and escapes without greeting. However, the fitters overlooked the loose cover plate and the adjustment of the headlights is still poor. In addition, cooling water is refilled,
but the fitter in the workshop has obviously neither investigated the reason for the too low level, nor is the customer verbally or in writing asked to keep an eye on the water level.

The costs

A note on the oil change and the filled lubricant at a price of 26.60 euros per Liter cannot be found in the car. The test team was amazed to note that, according to the invoice, window cleaner for five euros should have been poured into the full container. Annoying also because the dealership ranks in the middle among the Audi dealers with the inspection price of 292 euros.

Audi Center Berlin, Berlin

Test result: conditionally recommendable

How the customer is treated

The appearance of the noble Audi center in the east of the federal capital and the work done in the Workshop don't go well together. With its metal-clad facade, the establishment, which has no lack of parking in front of the entrance area, stands out from the usual look of the center. The service is convincing. Friendly employees offer coffee and biscuits and inform the service advisor immediately about the arrival of the customer. He appears promptly and performs his part convincingly. During his half-hour inspection of the vehicle, he thoroughly illuminates critical areas in the area of the brakes, brake lines and underbody and is satisfied with the condition of the vehicle. He immediately noticed the misaligned washer nozzle and the defective horn.

The work performance

The rude awakening is coming after the service advisor hands the freshly washed A3 to the customer and explains the individual maintenance items and the invoice in detail at his desk. He puts the car right in front of the exit and tells us that we may receive a call. 'If you were satisfied, say that you were extremely satisfied, that's positive for me too.' After reviewing the job performance, we cannot do him this favor. Only four of theseven defects were corrected correctly. The unhooked ABS sensor cable and the loose cover plate remained undiscovered, and the setting of the headlights is still poor.

The costs

Thus, only four of the seven defects are properly eliminated at an inspection price of 292 euros. In addition, the magnificent building also wants to be financed, as shown by 3.90 euros for washing additive and 37.50 euros for checking the horn, where only a simple fuse was broken.

Audi Center Mainz, Mainz

Test result: not recommended

How the customer is treated

A major inspection is specifically commissioned because the car is to be sold and the inspection is the basis of the trade. The service advisor agrees, but that doesn't seem to matter, because the inspection is very superficial. Only two of the seven prepared defects are correctly repaired. The headlights remain untouched, the unhooked ABS sensor cable and the loose cover plate apparently do not interest anyone in the workshop, and the missing tire compressor is also not noticed. When it comes to loss of cooling water, only liquid is topped up, but no research is carried out into the cause, and the customer does not receive any information that he should continue to monitor the water level.

The work performance

Even at the point of acceptance, the customer has an uneasy feeling: 'Should we get the car watch us on stage together? 'the master greets us. He inspects the A3 in a hurry, not discovering any defects during his cursory inspection. How about if he doesn't even sound the horn while driving into the pits. Back at his desk, he asks the customer succinctly whether the windshield wipers are still in order. He didn't even look at her. With an error correction rate of 40 percent, only the predicate 'not recommended' remains. You also have to make compromises when it comes to service: the prescribed test drive is inadequate at just under two kilometers, and there is no tick in the maintenance log at this checkpoint.

The costs

The 4.3 liters of longlife oil are on the bill at 122.56 euros. After all, the defective horn fuse is replaced free of charge and the water tank is cleaned. The customer can expect that at an inspection price of 306 euros.

ATU Auto -teile-Unger, Berlin

Test result: conditionally recommended

How the customer is treated

One Alternative to theThe ATU dealerships represented nationwide are Audi dealerships. auto motor und sport examined whether one can expect the same quality of work here at possibly lower prices at an ATU branch in Berlin. According to the order, the dealership carries out an inspection according to the manufacturer's instructions. The order can only be found in a pile of papers after an intensive search, and the service advisor neither inquires about the service book nor about abnormalities on the A3. Instead of a direct acceptance, he handles the entire procedure at the acceptance counter while standing, it takes a maximum of five minutes. There is no customer toilet in the company. 'You have to ask the foreman in the workshop whether you can use the toilet there.' This is more professional in the mostly posh Audi dealerships.

The work performance

With 20 points, the work performance is 'conditionally recommendable'. The mechanic overlooks the adjusted washer nozzle and the loose cover plate, and the setting of the left headlight is still poor. When picking up the A3, a foreman explains the scope of maintenance and the invoice and advises that you continue to monitor the coolant level. In addition, the wiper blade rubbers are torn and should be replaced. The customer is given a maintenance list and a diagnostic report with an error code query for all modules. The test drive of just under two kilometers is too short for that, and there is no free wash.

The costs

With an inspection price of 239 euros, the company is around 63 euros below the average for the seven Audi dealerships. It is also gratifying that there are no cash fillers on the invoice. However, the price for a liter of barrel oil is in the upper range at 29.39 euros.

Conclusion Audi workshop test 2013

None of the seven Audi dealerships delivered top quality in this year's workshop test from auto motor und sport . If a total of only 71 percent of all prepared defects are correctly repaired, then the premium manufacturer is far from meeting its own standards. No Audi dealership can reach the maximum of 30 points for work performance this year. This is largely due to the fact that the headlights are only properly adjusted in a workshop. The Audi center in Mainz contributes the outlier, in which only two of the prepared defects are properly repaired. Overall, the service is better, as five stars for six establishments prove. Particularly positive: A direct acceptance is carried out in all Audi workshops tested. However, the ATU branch in Berlin does without it.
