I ntotal 322 people died in road traffic in September. According to preliminary results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported that this was 6 people or 2% more than in the corresponding month of the previous year. The number of injuries rose by almost 10% to around 39,000 people.
Accident numbers are increasing, but fewer road fatalities
In the period from January to September 2016, a total of 2,428 people lost their lives in the Road traffic and thus 165 people (- 6.4%) fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year. One reason for this was the often bad weather in 2016. This is indicated by the number of motorcyclists killed with license plates for January to August 2016, which fell sharply by - 22.0% and - 109 people. The number of road traffic injuries rose from January to September 2016 by 1.0% to around 297,800 people.
Since the beginning of the year, the police have registered around 1.89 million accidents, an increase of 2.7% compared to January by September 2015. Among them were around 232,100 accidents with personal injury (+ 1.0%) and 1.66 million accidents with only property damage (+ 3.0%).
