2 016 Both companies have started their cooperation, in June 2019 they will now be introducing the Volvo XC90, the first model ready for series production that, in combination with the autonomous Uber driving system, can drive completely independently. This takes the strategic cooperation between the two companies to the next level.

As a base vehicle, the Volvo XC90 already has the most important safety functions to which Uber was able to adapt its self-driving system. With the technology, the self-driving vehicles can in the future be used in the Uber network, which is being transformed into an autonomous car sharing agency. The most important features of the series-ready, autonomously driving model include several back-up systems for steering and braking as well as for battery power. If one of the primary systems should fail for any reason, the backup systems intervene immediately and bring the vehicle to a safe standstill. In addition, a large number of sensors are installed on the roof and in the vehicle, which, together with Uber technology, enable safe driving and maneuvering even in the city.

Volvo

Safety driver stays on board

Even when the development stage is ready for series production, the Uber models are still dependent on a 'Mission Specialist' on board. These specially trained Uber employees currently operate and monitor vehicles in those areas that are intended and suitable for autonomous driving.

Volvo itself wants a similar basic vehicle concept for the introduction of its own, future autonomously driven vehicles in the early 2020s Years use. This technology, which will be introduced with the next generation of Volvo models based on the SPA2 vehicle architecture, is intended to enable unattended autonomous driving in clearly defined areas such as motorways and ring roads.
