I n July 2019, the two patents for an airplane model with the US -American patent office under the number US 2020/0010209 A1 and US 2020/0009974 A1 as aircraft (also translated 'aircraft') and 'Power supply for an aircraft and corresponding aircraft'.

Porsche and Boeing team develop premium aircraft

Corresponding drawings from the patent specification have now become public. They resemble the model that was published in the partnership between Porsche and the aircraft manufacturer Boeing. The two partners in cooperation with the Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight agreed at the end of 2019 to open up the market for urban flight mobility with a UAM (Urban Air Mobility). A corresponding letter of intent has been signed. “As part of the collaboration, an international team deals with the various aspects of Urban Air Mobility. This includes analyzing the potential of the market for premium products and identifying possible areas of application, ”it says.

The aircraft should be able to take off and land vertically. Engineers from both companies as well as the Porsche subsidiaries Porsche Engineering Services GmbH and Studio F.A. Porsche are working on the implementation and testing of the prototype.

Flying wing with foldable wings

The patent drawings from Porsche show a flying wing design with a fuselage integrated into the wing, but with a Tail fin for stabilization. The wings are foldable. The cockpit offers space for two people. As a drive, Porsche is apparently considering four ducted propellers embedded in the wings, two on the left and two on the right, of which the two rear can pivot. The latter are responsible for the propulsion in level flight and at the same time enable the smooth transition to hover for vertical take-off and landing.

So that the 'holes' in the wings caused by the fixed lift engines do not affect aerodynamics destroy the aircraft, Porsche wants to use a system of lamellae that is attached over the front pair of rotors. In level flight, when the lift engines are switched off, the blades close and should thus ensure a clean flow of air over the ducted propellers. If, on the other hand, the air taxi goes into hovering flight, they open again, so that the lift enginescan go about their work without disruption.

The electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) can fly autonomously, but can also be controlled by pilots.
