A At the moment, electric cars are still a dilemma for manufacturers. Components such as the battery above all make cars very expensive - so expensive that the selling price is often kept reasonably tolerable by subsidies. GM boss Mark Reuss has now announced at the UBS Global Industrials and Transportation Conference that the Americans will bring cheap electric cars onto the market in the medium term, from which his company also earns money.
According to Reuss, there will soon be none Luxury car prices are paid more for electric cars. After all, Tesla's midsize sedan Model 3 starts at 45,000 dollars (in Germany at 44,500 euros), while the large sedan Model S and SUV Model X often change hands for over 100,000 dollars. And even Tesla has made immense losses so far and only made money from time to time by selling emission rights to car manufacturers who build vehicles with internal combustion engines.
E-cars cheaper, combustion engines more expensive
While the costs of electric cars are falling, Reuss fears that cars with internal combustion engines will become more expensive because it is technically complex to comply with the ever stricter emission regulations. The GM boss is delighted that the breakeven point for electric cars can be reached much earlier than many think.
In the US, an electric car currently costs an average of 37,000 dollars - exactly as much as a Chevrolet Bolt (marketed in Europe as the Opel Ampera-e). GM loses thousands of dollars every time a Bolt /Ampera-e is sold. The battery is the cost driver. According to a study by management consultancy McKinsey, one kilowatt hour of storage capacity currently costs moreVehicle $ 100 to $ 225. Mark Reuss emphasizes that this price has to fall below $ 100 for automakers to make a profit.
Market battlefield: pick-ups
In addition, Reuss reiterated his announcement that an electric pick-up up to bring to market. The pick-up market segment is extremely important in the USA - Ford has been the best-selling car in the USA for years with the F-150. Ford is currently working on an electric version of the F-150, and Tesla boss Elon Musk recently announced that it will bring an electric pickup truck to market for under $ 50,000. GM wants to fight in this league. For the time being, the American manufacturer showed a Colorado converted into a military vehicle, which, however, is not battery-electric, but rather with a fuel cell drive. A similarly modified pick-up of the next larger type Silverado is in work.
Basis for GM's electric car plans: Perfect new platform
General Motors is bringing a new electronics platform onto the market with the new mid-range model Cadillac CT5, which, after the CT5, will also find its way into other new group models in the coming years.
4.5 terabytes of data per hour
It is above all the growing number of assistance systems with sensors and cameras as well as the processing of this information that require ever higher computing power. In the new GM electronics platform, per hour a data volume of 4.5 terabytes can be processed. This corresponds to the storage capacity of 35 smartphones with 128 GB of storage, which are used every 60 minutes. The current electronics architecture from General Motors can only process a fifth of this amount according to its own information.
Mark Reuss, President of General Motors, explains: “The critical role of software and its importance for our current and future vehiclescannot be stressed enough. Our new digital vehicle platform and subsequent systems will support all of our future innovations across a wide range of technological advances, including e-vehicles and increasingly automated driving. '
The Cadillac CT5 was shown for the first time in March 2019. The sedan replaces the ATS and CTS series, with a choice of two-liter turbocharged engines and a three-liter twin-turbo V6. It is not yet known if and when the Cadillac CT5 will also be offered by us.
