D The compact crossover previously known as Polar is called Kamiq. Kamiq? There was something! Right, in 2018 Skoda presented an SUV model for the Chinese market under the same name, but not on an MQB basis. The China version, which is still based on the old PQ34 platform of the VW Golf VI, has nothing to do with the Skoda Kamiq for Europe.
Skoda Kamiq: Like a second skin
That there will be a compact SUV of the VW brand has been known for some time. Initially the model operated under the working title “Polar”, but finally the model had to begin with “K” and end with “q” in order to be included in the model names “Karoq” and “Kodiaq”. So now Skoda Kamiq, which means something like 'The condition when something like a second skin fits perfectly in every situation.' This is what the Inuit living in northern Canada and Greenland say.

According to Skoda, the Kamiq is a' compact and lifestyle-oriented entry-level model 'and' combines the agility and driving behavior of a compact vehicle with the classic advantages of an SUV - higher seating position, better overview, easier entry and exit and greater ground clearance. '
The new Skoda Kamiq is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) and has a length of v on 4,241 millimeters, a width of 1,793 millimeters and a height of 1,531 millimeters. The wheelbase is 2,651 millimeters, and should guarantee generous space for five passengers. The trunk volume is 400 liters. With the rear seat backs folded down, the volume increases to a total of 1,395 liters. Optionally, the backrest of the front passenger seat can also be folded down so that particularly long objects of up to 2,447 millimeters in length can be transported without any problems.
HisThe front design with the two-part LED headlights and overhead LED daytime running lights follows the design language of Kodiaq and Karoq. The radiator grille has double ribs and the bonnet has strong contours. The front spoiler in underrun protection optics is intended to signal robustness. The taillights have the typical C-shape design, the diffuser in the rear apron adds a bit of sporty flavor. Dynamic viewing lights with running lights are available as an option.
In the interior, the Kamiq follows the Vision RS study and comes up with a free-standing 9.2-inch screen on the dashboard. The virtual cockpit is available as an option. The side ventilation nozzles reach into the doors, the applications are large, and the ambient lighting can be ordered in the colors copper, red or white. There are also newly grained surfaces and cover fabrics. Heaters in the front and rear seats as well as in the steering wheel and the windshield should ensure comfort. The infotainment offer has three systems and various networking options to choose from.
Five engines on offer
The engine portfolio of the Skoda Kamiq includes five engines - all with turbocharging. The base engine is a one-liter, three-cylinder TSI with 95 hp, 175 Nm and a five-speed manual transmission. Its 115 PS version mobilizes 200 Nm and comes with either a 7-speed DSG or a six-speed manual transmission. Both shifting options are also available for the 1.5 TSI with 150 PS and 250 Nm (from September 2019) and the only diesel, the 1.6 TDI with 115 PS and SCR-Kat. The engine program is rounded off with a three-cylinder natural gas engine. The 1.0 G-Tec has an output of 90 hp and 160 Nm and comes exclusively with a manual six-speed gearbox.
The chassis of the Kamiq is 37 mm higher than the Scala, but it can be restored with a sport option with adaptive dampers can be lowered by ten millimeters.
The Kamiq's safety package includes City Emergency Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, adaptive cruise control, drowsiness assistant and multi-collision brake. A blind spot warning, a reversing camera, a parking assistant, a fern light assistant and a rear cross traffic warning are available for an extra charge. An automatically opening door edge protection is always on board. An automatically opening tailgate or an electrically swiveling trailer coupling are available for an extra charge.

Vision X gave a view of the Kamiq
The Vision X concept car was around 10 centimeters at 4.25 meters longer than the Arona and a good 2.5 centimeters longer than the Skoda Yeti. Thus, the Kamiq could also be seen as the successor to the Yeti discontinued in 2017 in favor of the Karoq, which was not yet built on the MQB.

The Kamiq is about as long as a VW Golf - also different in width, height and wheelbase hardly differ from the dimensions of the Wolfsburg bestseller. As far as the engines are concerned, it makes sense to speculate on three- and four-cylinder petrol engines from 95 to 150 hp. The natural gas variant of the 1.5-liter TSI would also be conceivable, if only because the unit was already installed in the concept car. Mechanical all-wheel drive, on the other hand, is unlikely - an electrified rear axle could be used for this.
SUV and compact car in one
The aim of the crossover is, as is so often the case, to achieve the best of two worlds connect. In this case, the increased seating position and increased clarity with the agile driving behavior of a compact car. Since Skoda itself speaks of an “urban crossover”, all-wheel drive will probably not be an option catalog. In return, the manufacturer promises the latest generation of assistance systems and numerous Simply Clever features, which in German means something like 'umbrella in the driver's door' or 'flashlight in the trunk'.
