Mercedes GLE and GLE Coupé: New diesel hybrid

Mercedes is modernizing the range of engines in its large SUV series and is now equipping the GLE series with a 272 hp diesel hybrid.

The new Mercedes models GLE 300d 4Matic and GLE 300d 4Matic Coupé are based on the well-known two-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel of the OM 654 M engine family, which is now combined with a second-generation integrated starter generator (ISG). .

The new drive unit delivers 272 hp and 550 Nm of torque. Mercedes puts the electric turbo boost at 15 kW and 200 Nm. The GLE 300d 4Matic should sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and the top speed is given as 230 km/h. The coupe variant sprints just as fast, but is slightly slower at 226 km/h. Depending on the version, the WLTP standard consumption is specified as 6.1 to 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers. A start-stop function is also standard on board, as is the coasting functionality.,

Optimized all-wheel drive

The all-wheel drive has also been improved: Previously, the GLE with four-cylinder engines had a transfer case that distributed the drive torque in a fixed ratio of 50: 50 percent to the axles. A transfer case with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch is used in the GLE 300 d 4MaticC and GLE 300d 4Matic Coupé models. It enables variable shifting of the drive torque from 0-100 percent (torque on demand) between the axes. The fully networked transfer case with torque on demand also increases driving safety and agility on the road, especially when cornering. This is done by specifically influencing the yaw moment in the direction of oversteering or understeering the vehicle.

The new GLE variants can be ordered now, and they will then be in dealerships from November 2021. Prices start at 75,053 euros for the GLE 300d 4Matic. The corresponding coupe is available from 79,182 euros.,

Conclusion

Mercedes is equipping its GLE family with a new four-cylinder diesel hybrid drive and improving its all-wheel drive.
