M ercedes positions the new GLS as S- Class among the SUV models. In order to appeal to the more sporty natures among customers, the car manufacturer is adding an AMG variant to the series. The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4-Matic + celebrated its premiere at the LA Auto Show in autumn 2019.
612 PS plus E-Boost
For adequate driving dynamics in the two-tonne vehicle -SUV provides the well-known AMG all-purpose weapon: the four-liter biturbo V8 petrol engine, which comes with an integrated starter generator. It's called EQ Boost and, fed by the 48-volt electrical system, contributes 22 hp. However, the main burden is borne by the combustion engine, which delivers 612 hp. If both work together, a torque of up to 850 Nm is available. Enough to fire the AMG-GLS from zero to 100 km /h in 4.2 seconds. The electronics limit the speed at 250 km /h. With the chargeable AMG Driver's Package, up to 280 km /h are released for a maximum of seven people on board.
Nine gears arranged in an automatic are distributed together with the 4-Matic all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution of 0: 100 up to 50:50 and electronic rear axle locking differential, the drive torque. Electromechanical stabilizers resist rolling movements when cornering. Air suspension with adaptive adjustable dampers in the chassis area ensures a range of settings from comfort to sport. The level can also be adjusted from minus 10 to plus 55 millimeters.
In terms of design, the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 goes its own way. The enlarged radiator grille has vertical chrome struts, the apron lavishly dimensioned air inlets, the bonnet arches in power domes and the LED headlights use multibeam technology. The wheel arch extensions, side sill panels and exterior mirror housings are painted in the same color as the vehicle, the windows have chrome surrounds. The newly designed, width-emphasizing rear apron with diffuser, together with the exhaust system with two angular double tailpipe trims, dominates the rear view. 21-inch alloy wheels are standard, with up to 23-inch rims in the wheel arches for an extra charge. Optionally, the AMG-GLS can be further individualized with a Night Package and the black body applications it contains.
Elegantly upgraded cockpit

In the cockpit, customers can expect classics such as stainless steel pedals, special floor mats, fine wood applications and nappa leather seat covers as well as synthetic leather surfaces on the door panels. The widescreen cockpit, which bundles various screens under one surface and has been upgraded with AMG-specific displays, should not be missing. The driving experience can be individually adjusted with various driving programs.
There is nothing to adjust on the braking system. Here, 400 and 370 discs as well as six- and single-piston calipers ensure adequate deceleration values.
Now the price for the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4Matic + has also been fixed. The base rate is 150,303 euros.
