K onfuzius says:' You are not in small things patiently, you bring big projects to failure. ā€¯Following this advice, Mazda took its time with its new compact SUV. After the first exit we know: That's good, because the Mazda CX-5 will change the ranking of the VW Tiguan, Ford Kuga, Skoda Yeti and Kia Sportage.

The surprise follows at first sight: the four-door model looks smaller and stockier than it actually is - a merit of the sporty design. Who wants a chunky four foot long car? Although the Mazda CX-5 is not really flatter than the VW Tiguan at 1.67 meters, it visually crouches better on the road. Are you now suspecting meager entry comfort and little headroom? Not correct! Thanks to the princely wheelbase (2.70 meters, almost ten centimeters more than the Tiguan), you don't have to squeeze in the front or back of the car.

The knee and legroom in row two of the Mazda CX are amazingly magnificent. 5, only the rear seat cushions are a bit short. The bench cannot be moved lengthways, but its three parts can be neatly folded together at the push of a button. With the rear seats up, 500 liters of luggage fit in the rear. In row one there are comfortable seats with plenty of lateral support as standard - no comparison to the furniture of earlier Mazda models. In addition, they sometimes suffered from a loveless dashboard, but that too has been a thing of the past since the Mazda CX-5.

In the Mazda CX-5, on the other hand, there is a tidy workstation with an integrated touch screen, the most important interfaces for telephone and music storage as well as a rotary push button in the center console based on the model of the i-Drive from BMW.

New engines for the Mazda CX-5

Mazda lacked the role models for the new petrol engine , because at the moment everyone is focusing on reducing the displacement and charging. The Japanese, on the other hand, wanted to improve the efficiency of the gasoline engine before using forced ventilation. They seem to have succeeded with the two-liter gasoline engine in the Mazda CX-5, which has an unusually high compression ratio of 14: 1, but thanks to fine-tuning of the pistons and a clever ignition adjustment does not tend to knock. Its 165 hp (210 Newton meters of torque) unfold in contrast to its supercharged colleagues beautifully harmonious over the speed range. However, if you are in a hurry, you must always ensure that the speed is not too highsags.

With the also completely new 2.2-liter diesel - it is offered with 150 and 175 hp - this is not necessary, as it is supported by two turbos. The smaller loader works on low and medium tours, the larger one latches in briefly and takes over. The resulting torque wave (420 Newton meters in the strongest version) drives the Mazda CX-5 wonderfully at all times. At 14: 1, the compression of the compression-ignition engine is unusually low, which usually leads to cold start difficulties. Mazda has solved the problem among other things by means of clever exhaust valve control and optimized mixture formation and proudly announces a target consumption of 4.8 L /100 km. For comparison: the top seller Tiguan 2.0 TDI with 170 hp is six liters per 100 kilometers. The new gasoline engine from Mazda is said to have 6.1 liters - also a very presentable value.

Mazda CX-5 switches itself crisply

In order not to consume any fuel during breaks, Both four-cylinder engines in the Mazda CX-5 are equipped with an automatic start-stop system as standard. While the gasoline engine is offered with front or all-wheel drive (either as a switch or automat), an electronically controlled Haldex clutch always works in the powerful diesel. In the event of traction problems, up to 50 percent of the power is passed on to the rear axle.

In addition to the likewise fresh six-speed manual transmission with wonderfully short distances, there is a newly developed six-speed converter that has been optimized for optimum traction. On the first trip with the Mazda CX-5, both transmissions worked perfectly, although the manual box was much more fun thanks to the very short, precise shifting travel. Competitors will have less fun with the weight of the Mazda CX-5. During the development of the four-door model, lightweight construction with high-strength steels was consistently used. Result: an empty weight of less than 1,400 kilograms.
