The Hyundai noble subsidiary Genesis is also launching a coupe version of its large SUV GV80. Erlkönigs and a concept car give first glimpses of the production version.
Genesis has had the large SUV in its range since 2020 and has also been offering the model in Europe and Germany since summer 2021. The Koreans have identified the German premium SUVs à la Mercedes GLE and BMW X5 as competition. With the coupe version, they aim at the counterparts from Munich and Stuttgart.
Four-seater with ducktail
Erlkönigs had already announced the new SUV coupe. Genesis is now putting a close-to-production study of the GV80 Coupé in the spotlight in New York. The look of the concept car is inspired by the X Speedium Coupé Concept from 2022. The GV80 Coupé Concept features the brand's signature Crest grille with two superimposed G-Matrix patterns. Both in deep black. Flanking Genesis installed the well-known quad lights, which extend with interruptions to the front doors. The apron is also characterized by four deep air inlets, side and black-framed side cooling air inlets. The GV80 is what makes the GV80 a coupé thanks to the steeply sloping roof line at the rear. The combination of an upper roof spoiler and a small spoiler lip on the elliptical, concave ducktail ensure optimized aerodynamics. The continuous rear lights pick up the two-line light design of the front at the rear of the vehicle again.
Genesis treats the exhibited wheel arches to generously dimensioned forged wheels as fillings. The sporty touch is also provided by black window surrounds and elements in the sill area, which provide a clear contrast to the Magma exterior color.
The interior of the Genesis GV80 is also sporty. Four integral sports seats with carbon seat shells provide the strong frame for the passengers. The driver grips a sports steering wheel. A cruciform strut brace behind the rear passengers provides additional body stability. Black nappa and suede surfaces in combination with double stitching, orange-colored piping and carbon fibers on the functional surfaces round off the sporty look. The Koreans do not give any information about the drive of the concept car. But it's worth taking a look at the GV80 SUV and the prototypes.
GV80 Coupé for the GV80 facelift
The facelift of the GV80 is scheduled for 2024, in the course of which Genesis will also present the GV80 Coupé - the model name has not yet been decided. At this point, the model gains the styling cues from the G90 with redesigned headlights and taillights. Of course, the typical two-part light elements and the crest grille typical of the brand remain.
The coupé-like roof line, which slopes slightly towards the rear from the B-pillar, can already be seen on the prototypes. The tailgate is still heavily camouflaged, of course it is less steep than that of the SUV. The roof pitch gives luggage and the heads of the rear passengers less space.
The coupé takes over the drive from the SUV - Genesis may equip the engines with a little more power and less consumption. In Germany there is currently the GV80 with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel with 272 hp and 588 Nm, the power of which is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The petrol engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 304 hp and a maximum torque of 422 Nm. There is also four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The GV80 as a coupe should be equipped a little more noble, so that it ranks above the price of the SUV. Here Genesis is currently calling for 68,880 euros, the diesel version costs from 70,080 euros.
Conclusion
Genesis is copying the German premium manufacturers and is also launching its large GV80 SUV as a coupe version. At the same time as the market launch in 2024 - in Germany certainly a little later - the facelift of the GV80 can also be seen.
