Ford refreshes its large US SUV series with a comprehensive facelift. The Expedition receives new model versions and modern technical solutions.
The Expedition is the largest representative of the US SUV range from the manufacturer Ford. Its current - the fourth - generation has been on the market since 2017. High time for a comprehensive facelift, which the Expedition will now receive for the 2022 model year. The refresh, which will be available from the first quarter of 2022, will bring two new model variants with very different characters and a comprehensive technology update.
As part of the facelift, each Expedition also gets fresher styling with standard LED headlights, updated taillights and a new choice of wheels. In addition, the Platinum equipment line now has a new radiator grille with a double cross bar, which extends to the headlights and has the Ford logo at its centre. There are also chrome accents in the area of the fog lights.
With the Timberline package into the undergrowth
On top of that, the Expedition gets the Timberline equipment package that Ford recently presented for the slightly smaller Explorer . From the outside, this model variant can be recognized by its exclusively designed grille, orange accents and corresponding badges. In addition, there are the protective elements on the underbody that we already know from the F-150 Raptor sports pickup . The ground clearance of this model version is almost 27 centimeters, which improves the ramp and departure angles.
The 18-inch rims have 265/70 R18 Goodyear Wrangler AT tires with deep tread. The "Trail Turn Assist" known from the Bronco off-road vehicle is intended to reduce the turning circle and should therefore pay off both on- and off-road. The only engine available for the Ford Expedition, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6, makes 446 hp and delivers a maximum torque of 691 Newton meters. A two-stage transfer case helps distribute the power optimally.
Opera-ready as a Stealth Edition
With the same technical data as the Timberline, the 2022 Ford Expedition comes in the new Stealth Edition including Performance Package, which can be combined with the top equipment Limited and Limited Max. In addition, the full-size SUV series shows a completely different face here. In the truest sense: With a black radiator grille and numerous other elements in the darkest of all colors, it looks rather elegant. The red painted brake calipers, which do their daily work behind black 22-inch rims, act as eye-catchers. The tire size is 285/45 R22. A sporty chassis should improve the dynamics of the Expedition.
With their power and torque values, the new model versions clearly top the remaining equipment lines.Normally, the Ecoboost V6 squeezes 380 hp and a maximum of 637 Newton meters from its 3.5 liter displacement. In the platinum versions are 406 hp and a maximum of 651 Newton meters in the data sheet.
New infotainment and assistance technology
The model refresh also brings modern technologies for the interior of the Ford Expedition. The fourth generation of the Sync infotainment system is now being used. It comes standard with a 12-inch and optionally a vertically positioned 15.5-inch touchscreen in the center of the cockpit. A 12.4-inch and extensively configurable display now sits where analog instruments used to be. Rear-seat passengers can watch Amazon Fire TV on demand, and the new power-up software allows for over-the-air updates.
Ford is also massively expanding its range of electronic driving assistants. In addition to numerous individual technologies, the Expedition will also feature the Blue Cruise system for the first time, which bundles numerous automatic driving functions and allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on many North American stretches of highway. The "Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0" is intended to make driving, manoeuvring, coupling and decoupling a trailer easier. If the Ford Expedition is equipped with the "Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package", it can pull up to 4.2 tons.
Conclusion
A more modern infotainment system, two completely new model versions and a variety of assistance systems: the facelift of the Ford Expedition has it all. So far, however, Ford has not revealed how the modernization will affect the price.
