D er DS 3 Crossback will be launched on the German market as a compact SUV in April 2019. However, it can already be ordered in three petrol versions with immediate effect. On 18-inch wheels, its silhouette appears powerful yet modern. The window frames are invisible and the recessed door handles are a novelty in this segment. Its roofline appears almost simple and is not disturbed by any antenna. The chrome-plated twin tailpipe is symmetrical. The new DS 3 is 4.12 meters long, 1.79 meters wide and 1.53 meters high. Its wheelbase is 2.56 meters.

The first impression on the electrically adjustable driver's seat of the DS 3 Crossback is “Wow, that's smooth in here”. The seat cushions, reminiscent of the funny “air bumps” of the Cactus, literally caress the back, buttocks and thighs. The trick: They are designed with a foam treatment and two different densities. It's not even that soft in an S-Class. The headroom leaves nothing to be desired, even for giants. The steering wheel can be conveniently and easily adjusted to the respective driver type. All buttons, switches and buttons are also easy to reach and therefore easy to use.

The front interior is dominated by a futuristic design style, as is known from the current DS models. The 10.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment is centered on the dashboard. A head-up display projects driving information onto a small Plexiglas pane behind the completely digital instruments in the driver's field of vision. The center console comes from the DS 7 Crossback and scores with numerous shelves and the option of inductive smartphone charging. The wide center armrest ismovable. Bertrand Dantec, Design Director of the DS 3 Crossback explains that the outer air nozzles have been integrated into the doors 'to allow the puristic, high-quality dashboard to come into its own.' Up the back seat is similarly comfortable. Leg and headroom play in a higher class here than it appears from the outside. Only the very small windows of the rear doors and the resulting very solid-looking doors themselves offer a small visual restriction. Interestingly, this feeling evaporates quickly as soon as the doors are closed.

The impression of high-quality workmanship, which is confirmed without compromise in both the first and second rows, unfortunately ends behind the back seat. The lining and lining of the 350 liter trunk looks anything but premium. DS could lend a hand again. If the rear seat is folded down at a ratio of 2: 1, there is of course more space for loading, but also an unsightly ten centimeter high step. The standing height under the opened tailgate is around 1.85 meters.

Engine variants /drive

There is a choice of three drive variants: petrol, diesel and fully electric. Despite the SUV look, they are all exclusively front-wheel drive. The electric motor in the e-DS 3 Crossback has an output of 136 hp and gets its energy from a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery and a system for recovering the kinetic energy that is dissipated when braking. The charging system installed on board is compatible with all charging variants, i.e. domestic socket, wallbox and fast charging up to 100 kW. Once fully charged, according to the WLTP test cycle, the French electric car should cover more than 300 kilometers without intermediate charging.

Chassis /assistance systems

The DS 3 Crossback is the first vehicle from the PSA Group to be equipped with the new CMP (Common Modular Platform) based. It is manufactured near Paris in the Poissy production facility. In terms of assistance systems, the Frenchman comes with the new Active Safety Brake emergency braking function, which should also detect pedestrians and cyclists at night. The DS Drive Assist also paves the way for semi-autonomous driving. With the help of sensors and a camera, both the lane and the speed up to a speed of 180 as well as the distance to the vehicle in front can be maintained.

When you arrive at your destination, the DS Park Pilot ensures an automatic parking process. After the driver has passed a suitable parking space at up to 30 kilometers per hour, he only has to confirm the command to park on the touchscreen and the parking process begins. Another innovation in this B-segment is the DS Smart Access, which enables the owner of the DS 3 Crossback and a maximum of five other drivers to open and start the vehicle via smartphone. The owner is also free to limit the usage time.

DS 3 Crossback from 23,490 euros

If you want to configure a DS 3 Crossback in Germany, you can do so on the Internet or at one of the current 31 DS dealers. By the end of 2019, this number is expected to reach 60 dealersto grow. However, a DS is not available from Citroën dealers. The starting price is 23,490 euros. In addition to the series version from May to July, the limited special edition “La Première” is also available for launch. The purely electrically powered DS 3 Crossback E-Tense can be ordered from July 2019 and the So Chic version costs from 38,390 euros.

After the B-segment model DS 3 Crossback, the DS brand wants to be in the near future present a large sedan that is visually and in terms of comfort based on the brand's namesake, the legendary DS from Citroën from the 50s. There are also two compact C-segment models, such as the DS 4 Crossback, which is currently no longer in production. From 2023, DS wants to bring the third generation of vehicles onto the market, the price of which is to be even more oriented towards the premium offer, i.e. will have significantly higher entry-level prices
