D acia's first purely electrically powered car is an SUV: the Spring Electric has 15 centimeters of ground clearance and a matching off-road look with, for example, black plastic paneling on the wheel arches. The large door handles and the thick roof rails also appear stable. The dimensions of 3.73 meters in length, 1.62 meters in width (without exterior mirrors) and 1.51 meters in height qualify the Dacia Spring Electric as a city car. Its power connection is hidden under the central front logo, which makes it equally easy to reach from a charging station positioned on the right or left on the edge of the road.
With style package
For the market launch there is a so-called orange package, which gives the spring look additional freshness with bright orange accents. And Dacia has also come up with something special for the wheels: the steel rims are specially perforated to accommodate specially designed aluminum rim-look hubcaps. If you want to spend a little more, you can get real light alloy rims.
Lots of space inside
The interior of the Spring Electric offers space for four adults - for the rear, Dacia promises one meter of knee room and plenty of headroom, even for tall passengers. The volume of the glove compartment and the shelves in the doors as well as in the center console should total 23.1 liters. The trunk holds a generous 300 liters for this vehicle size - not counting the space for the optional spare wheel. With the backrests folded down, the storage space doubles to 600 liters.
Central locking and electric windows all round are part of the standard equipment. Between the digital round instruments there is a 3.5-inch, also digital section for displaying additional information. The driver activates Android or Apple voice recognition by pressing a button on the multifunction steering wheel. The option list includes a manual air conditioning system, a multimedia system with a seven-inch touchscreen, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and a real spare wheel.
The driver sets the speed levels using a rotary knob positioned in the center console - there are only the settings forward, neutral and reverse. The turning circle should be 9.60 meters and for a surcharge there is a parking beeper and a camera for the rear, the images of which are shown on the optional touchscreen.
Standard safety equipment includes a speed limiter, electronic brake force distribution, six airbags, one SOS button, an automatic light and an automatic emergency braking system. This works with a front radar and is active at speeds between seven and 170 km /h. The small electric SUV should only reach such speeds in free fall.
With 33 kilowatt motor
The electric motor of the Spring has an output of 33 kilowatts (45 hp) and generates 125 Nm of maximum torque. It is powered by a battery with a capacity of 26.8 kilowatt hours. It can be charged at the 230 volt domestic socket just as it is at a wallbox or at a DC charging station, whereby only the domestic charging cable is part of the standard equipment. Dacia specifies the following charging times: less than one hour at the 30-kilowatt DC terminal, less than five hours with a 7.4-kilowatt wallbox, less than 8:30 hours with a 3.7-kilowatt wallbox and less than 14 hours a 2.3 kilowatt household socket. The charging process can be monitored via the My Dacia app - the driver can also use this to start the air conditioning and locate the vehicle.
225 kilometers range
According to the WLTP, the range of the Spring Electric should be 225 kilometers - in pure city traffic even 295 kilometers. In the eco mode, which can be activated at the push of a button, another ten percent range should be added - the engine output is limited to 23 kilowatts (31 hp) and the top speed to 100 km /h.
Dacia is building a version of the Spring Electric specially designed for the needs of car sharing. According to the manufacturer, the average useful life of a car sharing car in Europe is 40Minutes, the average distance covered should be eight kilometers - demands that the jumper can easily handle. Its car-sharing variant can be opened using a smartphone. It is always painted white or light gray and equipped with particularly robust cover fabrics and floor mats. A navigation system and the parking aid are part of the standard equipment.
Variant as city delivery van
The third variant of the Spring is designed by Dacia as a city delivery van. In this version, the rear seat is omitted in favor of a larger trunk. Four lashing eyes are attached to the loading floor and the storage space is separated from the driver's area by means of a mesh partition. Dacia specifies the length of the loading space as around one meter (1,033 millimeters), the volume increases to 800 liters, and the permissible payload is 325 kilograms. The delivery van is always white and comes with a manual air conditioning system and radio with Bluetooth connection as standard - the spare wheel is generally omitted here in favor of weight optimization.
Market launch and price
Dacia emphasizes the low maintenance requirements for the electric drive: The manufacturer gives a three-year guarantee on the Spring (or up to a mileage of 100,000 kilometers), and the battery has an eight-year guarantee (or up to 120,000 kilometers). In addition, the manufacturer confidently speaks of the lowest total cost of ownership on the market. Can be ordered from spring 2021, deliveries will begin in the second half of 2021. According to the manufacturer, the Dacia Spring Electric should be 'unbeatably cheap'; a specific price is still pending.
