Costs and real consumption: VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TSI 4Motion R-Line

The large VW SUV Touareg comes as a 3.0 V6 TSI 4Motion R-Line for the cost check. How expensive is it in everyday life – and what does it consume?

If you want to really let it rip at VW, you can also order the large Touareg above the popular Tiguan. In terms of price, however, this has little to do with "Volks"wagen. Our test car, a 3.0 V6 TSI with all-wheel drive in the R-Line equipment, costs more than 80,000 euros, for example. But we are more interested in the everyday costs for consumption and maintenance than the purchase price.

Our test consumption

The 340 hp SUV swallows 12 liters of Super per 100 kilometers in the test average and thus exceeds the manufacturer's specification (WLTP) by 0.5 liters. At the pump, petrol costs 19.79 euros for 100 kilometers. On the sparingly driven Eco lap, consumption can be reduced to 9.2 liters. The costs therefore amount to 15.17 euros. With a particularly sporty driving style, 14.8 liters flow through the Touareg veins, which increases the thirst for a fuel investment of 24.41 euros for 100 kilometers. The costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (October 21, 2021 /Super: 1.649 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

For the VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TSI 4Motion, the state would like to see a yearly vehicle tax of 524 euros. According to Allianz Direct , liability insurance costs 354 euros in the same period. The insurer offers the partially comprehensive upgrade for an additional 464 euros. Anyone who tops up with fully comprehensive insurance pays an extra 857 euros. The monthly maintenance costs add up to 441 euros if the SUV is used 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage doubles, the value jumps to 807 euros. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption runs. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz Direct, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (accident-free/15,000 km per year/resident in the postcode area 70174/not under 21/partner driver older than 25 years).

Conclusion

The VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TSI 4Motion with 340 hp costs at least 76,465 euros and consumes an average of 12 liters, which means fuel costs of 19.79 euros per 100 kilometers. The monthly maintenance costs are 441 euros with an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If this increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 807 euros.
