A 2.3-ton SUV and a six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 367 hp: this combination can't be economical or cheap, right?
"With a generous amount of space, the most harmonious drive overall and the chassis that is as comfortable as it is agile, the GLE can't be beat here." In the comparison test against the Genesis GV80 2.5T AWD Luxus and the VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TSI 4-Motion author Heinrich Lingner sees the Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic clearly ahead. But what about the consumption of the full-fledged Swabian SUV? And what are the everyday costs?
Our test consumption
According to the WLTP standard, the three-liter, turbocharged in-line six-cylinder petrol engine consumes 10.4 liters. In the test, he allowed himself exactly one liter more per 100 kilometers, which resulted in fuel costs of 19.25 euros for this distance. The eco-consumption is significantly lower: 8.9 liters push the equivalent of the energy source required for 100 kilometers to 15.03 euros. If, on the other hand, the big Benz is moved in a sporty manner, consumption increases to 14.2 liters - and with it the fuel costs to 23.98 euros. These are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (20.12.2021 /Super Plus: 1.689 euros/litre).
Monthly maintenance costs
For the Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic, a vehicle tax of 480 euros has to be paid to the state every year. According to Allianz Direct , liability insurance costs 576 euros in the same period. Anyone who tops up with partially comprehensive insurance pays an extra 306 euros per year. A fully comprehensive upgrade costs 1,168 euros. If you include all the individual costs in an overall calculation, the Swabian SUV has monthly maintenance costs of 467 euros if it is used 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage doubles, this sum increases to 838 euros. The loss of value plays no role in this calculation.
How to test
The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption runs. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.
The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz Direct, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (accident-free/15,000 km per year/resident in the postcode area 70174/not under 21/partner driver older than 25 years).
Conclusion
The Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic with 367 hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo petrol engine costs at least 79,932 euros and consumes an average of 11.4 liters, which results in fuel costs of 19.25 euros per 100 kilometers. The monthly maintenance costs are 467 euros with an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If this increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 838 euros.
