With its two-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, the CX-30 is exotic in the crossover landscape. Is it the expensive or cheap variety?
"With high-quality materials, the best operation and a good chassis compromise, the CX-30 puts together the best overall package. The weak engine doesn't go with it." Author Thomas Hellmanzik sees a lot of light and little shadow in the intensive test of the Japanese. But what about the fuel consumption and maintenance costs of the exotic crossover with a two-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine?
Our test consumption
The nowadays unusual engine concept does not necessarily have a worse effect on drinking habits than in the turbo competition. Nevertheless, the consumption per 100 kilometers is one liter above the WLTP factory specification (7.2 instead of 6.2 liters). This results in fuel costs for this route of 11.30 euros. The fact that the Mazda CX-30 Skyactiv-G 2.0 M Selection can also scrimp is shown on the eco round: the consumption of 5.5 liters reduces the equivalent value of the premium petrol to 8.63 euros. The crossover, on the other hand, swallows 9.1 liters on average when moved in a sporty manner; fuel costs rise to 14.28 euros. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (08/18/2021 /Super E5: 1.569 euros/litre).
Monthly maintenance costs
The vehicle tax for the Mazda CX-30 Skyactiv-G 2.0 M Selection is comparatively high at 141 euros per year. The liability insurance costs 400 euros for the same period, while the surcharge for partially comprehensive insurance is 202 euros and that for fully comprehensive insurance is 529 euros. The overall calculation results in monthly maintenance costs of 253 euros if the crossover is driven 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage doubles, the amount increases to 449 euros. However, the loss in value does not play a role in this calculation.
How to test
The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption drives. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.
The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and comprehensive insurance with Allianz, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance.
Conclusion
The Mazda CX-30 Skyactiv-G 2.0 M Selection with 122 hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine costs at least 26,990 euros and consumes an average of 7.2 liters, which results in fuel costs of 11.30 euros per 100 kilometers pulls. The monthly maintenance costs are 253 euros for an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If this increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 449 euros.
