Cost and Real Consumption: Mini Countryman Cooper SD All4 Mini Yours Trim

As the Cooper SD, the Mini Countryman drives up with a powerful diesel engine. But is it also economical and inexpensive to maintain?

"The tight and expensive Mini is easy to operate and starts off quickly. It partially compensates for its shorter body with a sliding rear seat. It has little assistance." That's the conclusion of the test by editor Thomas Hellmanzik for the Mini Countryman Cooper SD All4 in the Mini Yours Trim. But does the attribute "expensive" also apply to fuel and maintenance costs? We tested, measured and recalculated.

Our test consumption

As SD, the Mini Countryman Cooper drives up with a 190 hp four-cylinder turbo diesel. According to the WLTP standard, the engine consumes 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. In the test, this becomes 7.2 liters, which is why the fuel costs for this route are 10.72 euros. The crossover SUV shows its more economical side in the eco round: Consumption drops to 5.1 liters, which reduces the equivalent value of the diesel tank to 7.59 euros. It will be more expensive for sporty drivers: you pay 13.40 euros because consumption increases to 9.0 liters. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (October 5th, 2021 /diesel: 1.489 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

For the Mini Countryman Cooper SD All4 in Mini Yours Trim, the annual vehicle tax is set at 306 euros. According to Allianz Direct , liability insurance costs 310 euros in the same period. For partial and fully comprehensive insurance, an additional 395 and 678 euros are due. The bottom line is that this makes monthly maintenance costs of 288 euros for drivers who drive their mini-SUV 15,000 kilometers a year. If the car is used twice as often, the sum increases to 501 euros. The loss in value is not taken into account in this calculation example.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption drives. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz Direct, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (accident-free/15,000 km per year/resident in the postcode area 70174/not under 21/partner driver older than 25 years).

Conclusion

The Mini Countryman Cooper SD All4 in Mini Yours Trim with 190 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel costs at least 44,500 euros and consumes an average of 7.2 liters, which means fuel costs of 10.72 euros per 100 kilometers . The monthly maintenance costs are 288 euros for an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If this increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 501 euros.
