E s is one of these model maintenance measures that only reveals itself at second or third glance. The facelift was primarily about eliminating weaknesses. And the design of the sports SUV really does not belong in this category.

Nevertheless, the visual changes do exist. The grille and exterior mirrors now have a dark, glossy finish, the LED taillights now have darkened glasses and the rims have a new design. In addition, Alfa Romeo has new colors a: Ocra GT Junior and Verde Montreal. The latter is reminiscent of the Montreal and its characteristic green. Also new is a titanium exhaust system from Akrapovic with carbon tailpipes. Furthermore, the Quadrifoglio models have a flap exhaust system as standard, which plays an explicit tone in race mode.

New materials, new design

The choice of materials in the interior is more of a criticism drawn. Alfa has therefore now made the center console a bit higher quality. In addition, the gear knob was embellished and the steering wheel designed differently. This became necessary because additional driver assistants can now be commanded from here. In cooperation with Bosch, all the requirements for level two autonomous driving have been implemented. Means: The driver can now be assisted in accelerating, braking and steering. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio now offers wizards for keeping in lane, for warning of obstacles in the Blind Spot Assist and for stop-and-go driving. There is also an active speed control system, traffic sign recognition and a drowsiness warning. Alfa is catching up with the competing premium brands.

The infotainment system now works faster and is easier to use and read.

The same applies to the infotainment system. Its processor now works faster and, as an alternative to the rotary push button, it can be commanded via an 8.8-inch touchscreen in the future. Thanks to a sufficiently large screen diagonal, the font is now displayed more clearly and the map of the navigation system is more detailed. In addition, Quadrifoglio drivers can now import data such as torque output and boost pressure. This can be done in a similar way to a smartphone, by swiping or clicking the menu fields with your finger to the appropriate position. Voice control via free text search now works much better than before. In addition, the Internet-based connected services now include traffic jam information in real time and offer a WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices.

We know the hot heart from the Giulia

Unchanged The twin-turbo V6 known from the Giulia Quadrifoglio beats under the bonnet of the sports SUV, which trumpets its passion beyond 3,000 rpm. The 2.9 liter engine, designed in collaboration with Ferrari's development department, has an output of 510 hp and a maximum torque of 600 Newton meters. A jagged ZF eight-speed automatic system manages the power.

Dino Eisele
The 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 is very dominant in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

Despite the tie in the engine, the driving experience with the Stelvio is naturally different than with its sister Giulia. If only because, as an SUV, it is higher, heavier and therefore at a disadvantage compared to the sedan in terms of driving dynamics. But also because it distributes its torque to all four wheels as standard, which in terms of handling shifts the priority from rear-end driving fun towards balanced traction. In the Stelvio, the powerful V6 biturbo with its unconventional one clearly dominatesCylinder angle of 90 degrees what happens: Its rough run and its capricious sound are always more present than the handling itself, although the two cannot be completely separated from each other.

However, if you try to make the Giulia light-footed from short-term memory banish, then the at least 92,500 euros expensive Stelvio looks extremely handy - for a two-ton truck. You always have to add that in relative terms; because even the extremely direct, but somewhat poor feedback, steering of the SUV can only gloss over the crowd when braking, turning in and accelerating out, but not discuss it away.
