P orsche wants to make the first electric sports car particularly attractive to its US customers and has put together a power tank package with its partner Electrify America - a subsidiary of the VW Group - which is included in the purchase price of the Taycan.

Taycan buyers should be able to charge their sports cars free of charge for three years at the charging stations of Electrify America. However, the charging package has minor restrictions. Charging is only allowed for 30 minutes at a time, whereby the Taycan can recharge electricity for a range of almost 90 kilometers in four minutes with a charging current of 350 kW and 800 volt technology.

Electrify America currently operates in 42 states have over 300 charging stations along highways. The network also includes 180 charging stations in 17 metropolitan regions. Each charging station has at least five charging stations, and sometimes ten charging points are also available. Two 350 kW chargers are available per charging station, all other charging points offer a charging current of up to 150 kW.

In addition, Porsche wants to equip all 191 US dealers with a charging infrastructure. 120 of them are to be equipped with 320 kW chargers, the others are to offer a charging capacity of at least 50 kW. Of course, Porsche will also offer offers for a domestic charging infrastructure. Here the charging power should be between 9.6 and 19.2 kW.

VW buys buffer batteries from Tesla

The VW subsidiary Electrify America is building on the further expansion of the charging station system Charging columns that are equipped with a battery as a buffer storage. This should enable large amounts of energy to be loaded into the car faster. In addition, Tesla batteries are to be used to store electricity at favorable times on site at the charging stations, so that as many electric cars as possible can be charged as cheaply as possible when there is high demand. Electrify America relies on 210 kW batteries with a capacity of up to 350 kWh. If necessary, the charging stations can be modularly upgraded with additional batteries. These energy storage systems are purchased from VW from competitor Tesla.
