Hybrid drive with 1,000 PS

It doesn't take much imagination that there is plenty of power under the body with the curved fenders. The flat side pods, the fin that grows out of the cockpit roof and the rear wing are reminiscent of the Le Mans racing car. When it comes to the drivetrain, the GR Super Sport largely relies on elements from the endurance racing car. The Japanese combine a 2.4-liter V6 with twin-turbo charging with the hybrid system from the WEC racer.

In total, the drive should be able to release 1,000 hp. In the racing car, the regulations limit the power to 750 hp with a weight of at least 1,100 kilograms. One day before the start of the Le Mans 2018 24h race, Toyota confirmed that the GR will not only remain a concept, but will also be seen in small numbers on public roads. The Japanese did not give a date. 'In the near future. When exactly is still a secret.' The Toyota GR Super Sport is thus positioned as an opponent for the Mercedes-AMG One, Glickenhaus SCG 007 and Aston Martin Valkyrie.

First, the hypercar was fired in mid-2018 by a video from the Japanese showing the GR Super Sport showed during test drives at Fuji Speedway. At the wheel back then: Toyota CEO and President Akio Toyoda. Various details could also be seen. The Japanese have modified the exhaust system compared to the concept car. There is a large central display in the two-seat cockpit. The new patent office drawings from August 20, 2020 show the silhouette of the hypercar including the opening mechanism. Here, the entire passenger cockpit, including windshields and side windows, folds forward and allows passengers to board via wide sills.

After After Porsche's withdrawal, Toyota was the only manufacturer to continue in the LMP1 class of the Sports Car World Championship (WEC). In 2019, the Japanese clinched a double victory at Le Mans and immediately announced that they would continue to compete in the WEC with a new car from 2020. And with oneHybrid-powered prototype based on the GR Super Sport. Both the road and the racing version of the super sports car are designed and intensively developed in the company's technical centers in Toyota City, Higashi-Fuji and Cologne.

The current LeMans success is also likely to meet the demand for one Boosting supercars for the road. To round off the story: The world motor sport association FIA and the ACO, the host of the Le Mans 24-hour race, presented the new cornerstones of an LMP1 regulation from 2020 in Le Mans 2018. The prototypes should be easier to identify with the manufacturers and should therefore be built in the style of hypercars. This should attract new manufacturers. And keep Toyota. The Japanese sat at the negotiating table and indirectly confirmed that the GR Super Sport Concept will serve as the optical basis for a prototype in the Le Mans top class from 2021.
