B almost every month the automobile manufacturers boast about the fact that their street legal To have pulverized existing best times in production vehicles and set new records. But why all the fuss? In the meantime, the PR departments are looking for every little gap in the Nordschleife record book in order to set a record for themselves. For example Skoda, whose Kodiaq RS missed the record mark for SUVs by a good 100 seconds, but claimed the top spot among the seven-seater SUVs. Or AMG, which missed Jaguar's record mark among sedans, but chose a new category.

The manufacturers now tend to invite independent bodies to their record drives in order to increase their credibility. Notaries certify the lap times. In the past, you could only check on YouTube videos in most cases. Who knew when a manufacturer had turned up a screw too much to give their own vehicle that extra kick?

In most cases, the records are set on the 20.6 kilometer variant . In this case, the start and finish lines in route section T13 are separate from each other. Otherwise the route measures 20.83 kilometers. Who are the record holders on the Nordschleife?

Fastest sports car, record holder in general

In September 2017, Porsche got the record back from Lamborghini. The 700 PS strong GT2 RS undercut the Huracán Performante by five seconds. Lamborghini didn't let that sit on them, upgraded the Aventador to SVJ and hit a lap time of 6.44.97 minutes.

Lamborghini was only happy for a few months. Then Porsche showed up on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife with reinforcement from Manthey Racing. And the GT2 RS took back the record for the fastest street-legal sports car. Porsche test driver Lars Kern steered the biturbo super sports car around the track in 6.40.3 minutes. The only part that was not street legal was the racing seat, which was installed for the safety of the driver.

Manthey Racing made the GT2 RS even faster than the starting point with numerous modifications. In Meuspath, an aerodynamic package was developed for the over-911 and a special coilover kit was built into it. To do this, the GT2 was put on magnesium wheels, the brakes were revised, an additional water tank was installed and the setup was optimized.

Fastest all-wheel drive & vacuum cleaner

Lamborghini had to cede the overall record to Porsche. Sant’Agata Bolognese can still boast two records. The Aventador SVJ with 770 hp and 720 Newton meters of torque is the fastest all-wheel drive on the Nordschleife. And at the same time the fastest production sports car with a naturally aspirated engine. A few more key data on the SVJ. It accelerates from standstill to country road speed in 2.8 seconds, crosses the 200 mark in 8.6 seconds and flies over straights at over 350 km /h - provided they are long enough. According to Lamborghini, the 1.5-tonne (dry weight) super sports car is supposed to brake from 100 km /h in just 30 meters to a standstill.

Fastest hybrid

There are a few disputes , one of them is the McLaren P1 LM (LM for Lanzante Motorsport). The Lanzante Motorsport company converted the P1 GTR, which is only suitable for the race track, into a super sports car that is even allowed to drive on public roads. Larger wings helped the English hybrid in the final test phase as a prototype XP1LM to a lap time of 6,43.2 minutes.

A car for the racetrack, but which is street legal due to modifications: count or not count? It's a matter of definition. Counts the P1 from LanzanteMotorsport, of which there are five, plus it would be the fastest hybrid car on the Nordschleife. Otherwise, this honor goes to the Porsche 918 Spyder.

The 887 hp super sports car with 4.6 liter V8 and two electric motors lapped the Nordschleife in 6.57 minutes in September 2013. A fable time that was pushed down by 17 seconds five years later. Sports car development is progressing so quickly.

Fastest electric car

The Chinese-American start-up Nio claims the record for the fastest electric car on the Nordschleife. The EP9 is said to have conquered the Nordschleife in 6.45.8 minutes. According to the manufacturer, the 1 megawatt electric car, which drives four 250 kilowatt electric motors, accelerates to 200 km /h in 7.1 seconds and reaches a top 313 km /h.

Fastest four-door fully electric Sports car

The time of Nio couldn't be beat. With its first electric sports car, the Taycan, Porsche has set a record in a specially selected category. Test driver Lars Kern steered the all-wheel drive e-athlete in 7:42 minutes over the 20.6-kilometer variant. This makes the Taycan the fastest four-door fully electric sports car. The test vehicle was a pre-production model.

Fastest front-wheel drive vehicle

Manufacturers alternate regularly in this category. Sometimes Seat was in front, sometimes Renault, sometimes Seat, then Honda. Most recently, the Japanese had the best end for themselves among the front-wheel drive. The Type R with a 320 hp four-cylinder turbo threw itself around the 73 corners in 7.43.8 minutes. For safety reasons, the Japanese built a roll cage and instead threw out the infotainment system and the rear seats. To compensate for the extra weight of the roll cage, as it is called.

In April 2019 Renault struck back again and continued with the new, 300 hp Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R with 7: 40,100 minutes a new best time for front-wheel drive series vehicles on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. And now the Chinese from Lynk & Co are suddenly record holders. With the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept, a disguised TCR racer with 528 hp for the road, the Nordschleife was lapped in 7: 20.143 minutes. Ex-WTCC-Chapion Thed Björk was at the wheel. Strictly speaking, the vehicle is still a prototype. Production for the street is not yet guaranteed.

Fastest sedan

The Lynk & Co 03 is not just a front-wheel drive, but also a four-door sedan. With his time of 7: 20.143 minutes, he replaces the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 as the record holder in this category. Jaguar's XE SV Project 8 achieved a lap time of 7:21:23 minutes. The English followed suit later. According to Topgear, development driver Vincent Radermecker rode the track in 7.18.36 minutes on a second attempt. The four-door series sedan is600 hp, limited to 300 copies worldwide and costs over 180,000 euros. Jaguar couples the five-liter V8 supercharger in its most powerful production car ever to an eight-speed automatic. The XE SV Project 8 with adjustable front and rear spoiler is over 320 km /h fast. Carbon-ceramic brake discs with a diameter of 400 millimeters and six huge brake pistons on the front axle delay the fastest production sedan in the history of the Nordschleife to date.

Fastest production four-seater

V8 biturbo, 639 hp , a torque of 900 Newton meters, all-wheel drive, 315 km /h at the top: a car with such key data has to claim a record for itself - thought Mercedes-AMG as well.

It was enough against Jaguar's Project 8 not quite. The AMG GT 63 S 4Matic + is missing a few seconds on the English sports sedan. They reacted quickly and made the four-door the fastest production four-seater on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The Project 8 only has two seats. Ex-racing driver and development engineer Demian Schaffert drove a fully equipped Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic + through the Green Hell in 7.25.41 minutes.

Fastest SUV

The duel between Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-AMG, Affalterbach has won between Italy and Germany. Alfa presented the Stelvio QV with its 510 hp and 600 Nm torque. The lap time of 7.51.7 minutes sowed doubts. Some thought that the video was a bit of a trick. There was no evidence. That is why the record belonged to Alfa.

Until AMG sent the GLC 63 S 4MATIC + with its all-purpose V8 biturbo onto the racetrack. In the version with 510 hp and 700 Nm. The Swabian SUV achieved a lap time of 7,49,369. A difference of less than two seconds to the Alfa over a distance of over 20 kilometers.

Fastest seven-seater

Race driver Sabine Schmitz beat the 240 hp Skoda Kodiaq RS in 9.29.84 minutes over the Nordschleife. No comparison to the lap times of AMG and Alfa. But people are creative in the Czech Republic. The Kodiaq RS is the fastest series seven-seater on the Nürburgring.

Fastest station wagon

Sport auto is also among the record holders. For the 12/2017 issue, Christian Gebhardt set out to break the record for station wagons. It worked. Our super tester led the 612 PS and 850 Nm strong Mercedes-AMG E 63 S T-model over the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 7.45.19 minutes. The record of the Seat Leon ST Cupra 280 - driven by Jordi Gene - was undercut by 13 seconds.

Just like that: the all-wheel-drive station wagon weighs over 2.1 tons, is almost five meters long and has a Luggage volume of a maximum of 1,820 liters - and is still faster than a Porsche 997 GT3 RS (7.48 min.).
