Logical: Neither James Dean nor Steve McQueen could be there. But even if the most prominent Porsche drivers of the past had come to the premiere party of the Porsche Boxster Spyder, it would have been difficult for them to mobilize more masses: No press conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show was better attended, no car was besieged by the fans. The P orsche Boxster Spyder is rising as the third star within the Boxster series and is setting its own highlights: Lighter, stronger, faster, more agile - Porsche wants to bring steam into the second half of the Boxster model cycle with many superlatives .

The Porsche Boxster Spyder has no electric convertible top

Around 2,000 units, i.e. around ten percent of the Porsche Boxster / Cayman -sales share, should be attributed to the Spyder in the future. Not more but also not less. Because as beautiful as the mid-engine roadster with two eye-catching scoops on the new, full-length trunk lid may look: With the light awning that replaces the classic convertible top, it is more suitable for 'It-neverrains-in-southern-California' markets than for the north German lowlands. The roof cannot be closed quickly with the help of electronics within 20 seconds, it has to be unbuttoned in two parts - a somewhat tedious procedure that convertible drivers of the 21st century have long since become unfamiliar with. After all, the stripped-down protection from the elements makes its contribution to weight reduction.

The Porsche Boxster Spyder is a stripped-down fun car

It weighs 1,275 kilograms the Spyder weighs 80 kilos less than a Porsche Boxster S, 21 of which are on the roof alone. Lightweight aluminum doors save a further 15 kilograms, the omission of the air conditioning 13 and the tank reduced by ten liters save another seven. The fact that the lightweight seats weigh twelve kilograms less than the conventional Porsche Boxster chairs is not at all a disadvantage. You feel comfortably embraced and optimally supported on brisk cornering. And that's exactly where the Porsche Boxster Spyder belongs: With its vehicle center of gravity lowered by 25 millimeters, the strengthened one3.4-liter boxer (320 instead of 310 hp) and the torque increased to 370 Newton meters (Boxster S: 360 Nm), it belongs without reservation to the category of funcars.

The Porsche Boxster Spyder bounces acceptably even on bad roads

The very direct steering and the unusually neutral driving behavior ensure that the heart is relieved already beats a lot faster in the first few meters - especially as the six-speed manual transmission lets the gears slip quickly and crisply. And the next good news: The increased agility is not too much at the expense of comfort. Even on bad US roads, the new Porsche springs (Price: from 63,404 euros) acceptable. The surcharge of around 7,000 euros compared to the Porsche Boxster S should definitely not only lure actor legends from February 2010.
