D he new Shelby GT500, the Mustang par excellence, is not coming to Europe. Fans and interested parties have to swallow first, but nothing else was to be expected. The most powerful car in the company's history rides where it is built: in America, in the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.
About 3.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km /h, but at 290 km /h It's over
So far, the Shelby GT350 is the strongest Mustang of the sixth generation with 533 hp and 582 Newton meters. From autumn 2019, the pony car will be overtaken by its stronger brother on the road, the drag strip and the racetrack.
The GT350 gets its power from a free-aspirating 5.2-liter V8 engine with flat rate -Plane crankshaft. The crank pin offset is 180 degrees, which makes the engine run more restlessly, but promises advantages in terms of response behavior and speed. The design, displacement and number of cylinders remain the same in the GT500. However, the hand-built eight-cylinder is inflated by a 2.65-liter Roots compressor. The rumors about a change to turbocharging are thus off the table.
The compressor increases the output to officially 771 hp. The maximum torque is finally given as 847 Nm. The Shelby GT500 thus clearly surpasses the Ford GT super sports car with its 656 hp. And it has twice as much power under the hood as the first Shelby GT500 from 1967.
Ford does not hang the V8 compressor with aluminum block on a six-speed manual gearbox or a 10-speed automatic transmission, but on a seven-speed Dual clutch transmission, as it is also installed in the GT. The cardan shaft is a carbon constructionand forwards the drive torque to a limited slip differential. The double coupler should change the gear stages in sport mode in 80 milliseconds, and thus improve the Sprint capabilities of the Shelby GT500. Ford speaks of 0-100 values in the middle 3-second range. The quarter mile (402.34 meters) should be mastered by the muscle car with Launch Control in under 11 seconds. Only when it comes to top speed is the new GT500 not allowed to set a new record, because Ford limits the power pony to 290 km /h. The predecessor was allowed to run well over 300 km /h uninhibited.
Two packages for GT500
The over-Mustang is stopped by the largest braking system that is available in a sports coupe on the American market. Says Ford. Six piston calipers bite into a two-part brake disc with a diameter of 420 millimeters on the front axle. The braking system sits behind 20-inch wheels. The rims in the Shelby GT500 with a carbon track package are made of carbon fiber.
It is the more radical of the two handling packages offered. One that should be particularly good for the racetrack because it is even more aerodynamic. Ford draws the front splitter on the outside more radically, places a GT4 rear wing on the trunk lid and puts tailor-made semi-slicks of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 type on the wheel carriers. The French have adapted the mix and tread to the heavily motorized muscle car. In addition, the rear rollers are half an inch wider (20x11.5 instead of 20x11). In the interior, the rear seats fly out. The more civil version has a tear-off lip, Gurney Flap, on the trunk lid. It rolls on specially made Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Both model variants benefit from updates to the diffuser.
Even without the add-on parts, the GT500 is externally different from the GT350 and the other Mustang versions. The front wheel arches are wider. The grille is taller and wider. As befits a Shelby, an upright Cobra adorns the grill. The openings in the front are twice as voluminous as on the GT350, says Ford. Six heat exchangers in the engine compartment should improve heat management, as well as the 31x28 inch air hole on the muscular bonnet. The aluminum insert can be removed, which has two advantages. On the one hand, you can see parts of the engine better. On the other hand, the heat escapes even better.
Five different driving modes
Ford's performance department is redesigning the chassis, tasting the electronic power steering, installing lighter torsion springs and adapting the geometry of the suspensions, so that the GT500 can thread through corners and rides them quickly. The Shelby is to set new standards for muscle cars in lateral acceleration. The electronically adjustable Magne-Ride chassis is currently on board.
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 knows five different driving modes: normal, weather, sport, track and drag. The “line-lock” function, which allows the brakes to be controlled independently of each other, is particularly suitable for use on the drag racing track. In other words, if only the front brakes bite, the rear wheels can spin. A lot of white smoke is guaranteed. The driver enjoys the burnout on Recaro sports seats. Ford decorates parts of the dashboard with carbon.
More expensive than the competition
Now Ford has also announced the price of the new Shelby GT500. It costs at least $ 73,995, which is a good 65,000 euroscorresponds. This makes it almost $ 15,000 more expensive than the Shelby GT350 and also more expensive than the direct competition Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 ($ 62,000) and Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye ($ 71,945). But the Shelby is likely to be significantly more expensive for most customers, after all options such as the “Carbon Fiber Track Package” (18,500 dollars), the handling package (1,500 dollars) or the technology package (3,000 dollars) cost a lot of extra money /p>
Nevertheless, US customers pay a significantly lower price than European Shelby GT500 buyers who purchase their car from a specialized importer. Geiger Cars from Munich, for example, ordered ten copies of the new GT500 some time ago. The US car specialist cannot yet name a price and does not yet know exactly when it will receive the cars. He assumes, however, that the Shelby will settle at around 100,000 euros.
