D he answer to the question what feasible does not depend on where you are in a spiritual, moral or technical sense, but on where you want to go. Meanwhile, ski centers are being built in the desert sand, artificial islands are being built up in the sea, and areas for wheat cultivation are already being explored in Greenland. So why not build racing cars out of practical, four-door utility sedans or transform an SUV with an off-road vehicle history into a thoroughbred sports coupé?

Since Volker Mornhinweg has been in charge of the sporty Mercedes subsidiary AMG, thoughts have become freer and goals more ambitious in the Swabian town of Affalterbach. Why - this is the seemingly legitimate question there - should AMG not develop its own sports car? And why shouldn't you, as the adopted grandson of the car inventor, take the liberty of setting a signal in all genres or at least leaving a scent mark?

The high-flyer also looks super sporty

According to the self-confident motto: From where we are, it goes on. In accordance with this newly formulated dogma, the project called Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series was, so to speak, an obvious obligation. The loyal customers probably saw it that way too, who - without having intimate knowledge of the true capabilities of the high-flyer, which cost almost 330,000 euros and was visually emphasized sporty - signed all available sales contracts (350 copies) within a very short time.

Your willingness to take risks in honor: A Mercedes SL 65 AMG that weighs more than two tons and is equipped with every comfort, which can succeed as a perfect quick-change artist and mediator between the worlds both as a cozy luxury coupé and as airy outdoor pleasure to transform it into a super sports car is about as complex as equipping the 20.6 kilometer long Nürburgring Nordschleife with a rain roof and a heated lane. Technically, both are possible - but how? So you just have to want it and be able to afford it.

Consistent focus on sportiness

In order to prove this, the AMG development team around Tobias Moers pulled out the stops that had not necessarily been a priority at AMG until now. The lightweight constructionfor example, or the consequent focus on sportiness in the sense of maximum lateral dynamics. Adapting the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series to the supersport segment in terms of horsepower should have been the easiest exercise, although the SL 65 AMG, which is already starting with 612 horsepower, basically shows no real need for action. However, since the increase in performance of the twelve-cylinder, which operates with a working volume of just under six liters, could obviously be achieved with simple means and was also requested by the customers, the status quo in the area of the engine was quickly suspended.

The gulp from the performance bottle was moderate in the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series. Because the two newly implanted turbochargers, with their spiral cross-sections increased by twelve percent, put the twelve combustion chambers, each almost 500 cubic centimeters in size, so energetically and efficiently under pressure, the pending escalation in the combustion chambers had to be artificially reduced. Without electronic punishment measures, there would have been serious differences with the downstream drive train in the long run.

Twelve-cylinder is slowed down

The amicable agreement on the engine side looks like this: The nominal maximum output of 670 PS at just 5,800 rpm, the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series has an (electronically limited) torque of 1,000 (read: thousand) Newton meters, which the Big Block in the speed range between 2,200 and 4,200 rpm is so casual, jovial and ultimately so The way Chancellor Merkel registers her claims to power with tremendous effectiveness.

This twelve-cylinder Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series - as violent as it is - actually runs with braked foam. What he does in smooth cooperation with the five-speed automatic transmission, which can withstand this massive torque, is rare. The character of the unrecognizable SL derivative goes off like the proverbial wild boar.

The pressure of the engine is omnipresent, sustained and in the required dramaturgy of such casualness that it would be more likely to be technically close to a rocket propellant than to a conventional combustion engine. Even if the sprint up to 100 km /h from a standing start could not be fully reproduced in the time of 3.8 seconds announced by the manufacturer, every time the spit is gone when the accelerator in the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series is relish again starts twitching.

You can hardly feel the 1.9 tons

There have never been doubts about the longitudinal dynamic class in the strong AMG environment, and that's how the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series marks it naturally a new Mercedes record. That this is by far the most powerful AMG Mercedeswould show so success-oriented in terms of lateral dynamics, was not to be expected in this compelling logic. After all, there are still very narrow limits to genetic manipulation in the automotive sector.

In other words: Despite the sobering result of the slimming measure, which was implemented with great effort and expense, a sports car is presented here that, thanks to its amazingly agile nature, is able to almost completely forget the mass of 1,880 kilograms when fully fueled. The spontaneous turning behavior and the reactions that the driver can understand and parry at any time in the limit area of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series identify him as a professional in his field.

Honorable results in the slalom and evasive test

Already the respectable results in the slalom and evasive test are the first solid evidence of this that with skilful interventions in the technical structure it is possible to represent a paradigm shift that was previously considered impossible - even if during the first few kilometers in city traffic it may not necessarily look like you have been chosen in this technology /human constellation, great in terms of driving dynamics. The driver has to get used to the sheer size of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series, especially in terms of its width, as with all other top-quality products of the genre, although there is generally nothing to do with the clarity due to the not too low seating position suspend there.

The somewhat wooden, grumpy way with which the Über-AMG appears when turning in crawl traffic due to the locking effect of the rear axle differential is just like the inclination that is beginning to exist in curves, also under the influence of the ESP To twitch the stern just a little too much gas quickly, just a warning signal - one that makes the violence very clear in a healthy way and, if necessary, can conjure up a little pale in the face of the inexperienced observer. The necessary respect for 1,000 Newton meters of torque is of course also demanded from the driver of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series.

What he does is not malicious, but rather meant nicely

The Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series automotive power plant only runs in smooth mode in an expert hand when the space is wide, the (electronic) shackles are short and ambition is stimulated. Only when the necessary gradual approach to the limit area does the driver gain access to a new horizon with a coherent and established driving program. Assuming sensitive handling of the accelerator pedal, a slight, safety-oriented tendency to understeer appears at the very high driving dynamics limit after agile turning, which in any case - againAssuming you have a little feeling on the accelerator - it can be converted into neutral cornering or, if necessary, slightly oversteering cornering.

The tendency of the rear of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series to break out in almost all driving situations when ESP is switched off may have a fundamentally frightening character for many, but in the Black Series model it is - let's say - more socially acceptable Expression. In other words: what he does is not malicious, it is meant nicely. You just have to know where, when and how to play with him.

Completely redesigned sports suspension

Despite all the suggestiveness that could be discovered when looking at it from a different perspective: The protective character of its nature cannot be denied despite all natural violence. This does not only mean the permanently installed roof skin of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series in CFRP with an integrated roll bar, which is now slightly flatter over the heads of the two-person crew. The completely redesigned, in the rebound and compression stage of the dampers and in the toe and camber fully adjustable and significantly wider set up sports suspension shows, despite its constitutional rigor, even ready to compromise in the representation of driving comfort.

Suitable for long journeys and with a decent trunk

Neither the dry hardness in rolling nor the partial waiver of insulating materials and the rather loud rolling noises of the super-wide Dunlop tires result in the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series to defensive reactions of the body. In short: even long stages can easily be tackled in the completely black interior, which is stylishly lined with nappa leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber, provided a healthy amount of concessions is available. The rather sparingly padded sports shells of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series in light CFRP construction are indeed very well developed in terms of the achievable lateral acceleration - keyword body fixation - but they are quite thin-skinned and therefore hard on the surface.

On the other hand, the fact that the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series does not have to do without a properly sized trunk could in turn be a decisive purchase incentive in this price range. In addition to the light seats and the extensive kilo savings made on the body through the use of high-quality and sinfully expensive carbon fiber composite materials, it is also the technically high-quality components such as the brakes that, despite their significantly increased dimensions, help achieve the self-set savings target of a quarter ton to reach. The all-round internally ventilated and perforated composite disc brakes of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series, with a diameter of 390 and 360 millimeters, could not be used either during the brake measurement in Hockenheim or theLap time measurements on the two race tracks elicited a sign of weakness, which is why the tremendous positive acceleration is also counteracted by a correspondingly negative deceleration.

Good deceleration when braking at full speed from top speeds

Deceleration rates of up to 11.7 m /s² of the Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series are even more indispensable in this weight and performance class his. Anyone who - whether voluntarily or under duress - has applied the brakes from a top speed of 320 km /h will only get a definitive idea of what it means to have stood under the influence of adequate technical precautions.
