DS E-Tense Performance: technology and design original meter

Sports car study in the first check: With the E-Tense Performance, DS presents a preview of the new design language of the Stellantis brand, at the same time the power study is designed for the development of future electric DS models.

The roadmap for DS automobiles is also clear, from 2024 every new DS model will be fully electric, from 2025 there will be no more vehicles with combustion engines in the portfolio. In order to present the future in a study, DS incorporated its experience from Formula E into the study.

All-wheel drive, 8,000 Nm, 2 seconds to 100

The all-wheel drive consisting of two electric motors represents a total output of 600 kW or 815 hp. The electric motors deliver 250 kW on the front axle and 350 kW on the rear axle - they are responsible for a maximum torque of 8,000 Nm. When it comes to acceleration, the units allow the prototype to sprint to 100 km/h in two seconds. Recuperation is also 600 kW. Although the study has a classic brake system with disc brakes and brake pads for safety reasons, only the regeneration system is used for negative acceleration. The engineers placed the battery, which was created in cooperation with Saft, in the middle of the rear.

The DS E Tense Performance with its body made of carbon fiber aluminum composite material serves not only as a prototype for technology development, but also as an original meter for designers. In particular, the expressive front serves as a preview of the upcoming DS design. The new face is intended to represent an expression surface instead of a radiator grille and has already been presented in a similar way on the DS Aero Sport Lounge 2020 concept car. Here, the vehicle designers have illuminated the DS logo and placed it centrally in the front with a 3D effect. It is intended to welcome drivers and passengers with a special greeting sequence.

Aggressive design without a rear window

Other eye-catchers in the study are the narrow LED lights made of 800 LEDs, which give the new DS face an aggressive touch with a high recognition effect. Together with the contoured bonnet, the flared wheel arches and the flat windscreen, the study looks sporty, slim and elegant. The two-door car appears with large air intake and outlet openings on the sides and not only shows a narrow band of windows but also a powerful D-pillar. The rear end is also characterized by a sports car design interpreted in a modern way. A powerful diffuser dominates the view along with the low lights and huge DS logo. There is no rear window, here the roof element protrudes almost to the LED lights.

In mid-2020, the Stellantis group (a merger of PSA with Peugeot, Citro├źn and DS, among others) and FCA (Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, etc.) showed its platform strategy and illustrated the understanding of its brands in a claim. For DS, the motto is "The Art of Travel, Magnified". Accordingly, the two platforms STLA Medium and STLA Large are intended for the brand from 2023. They are for vehicles in the C/D and D/E designed for middle class to upper class.

Both platforms have an electric range of up to 800 kilometers and have the fast charging target of 32 kilometers range per minute. Consumption is 12 kWh per 100 kilometers. Standardized battery packs and the The possibility of software updates via OTA should keep the platforms up-to-date for a long time.The series models can be powered by the electric modules #2 (up to 180 kW) and #3 (up to 330 kW).They contain the motor, gearbox and inverter.The EDM are compact and flexible and can be easily scaled. They also allow front, rear and all-wheel drive.

First date with the sports car study


For the first personal identification The DS E-Tense Performance study has brought support along with it: it is parked next to one of the brand's current Formula E racing cars in the photo studio. Incidentally, the racer serves as a gene donor: the 250 kW electric motor, which drives the front wheels in the sports car and is part of the drive system, alone provides propulsion in Formula E.

It's obvious at first glance: In reality, the DS E-Tense Performance looks less aggressive than on photos. Although it is a thoroughbred sports car, its design follows the brand's standards, looks elegant but not cocky.

The door opens wide. You can climb into the cockpit via a wide side skirt. The sports bucket seat is rigidly mounted, so it cannot be adjusted. Formula E racing drivers are probably planned for future test drives. In any case, the 1.92 meter tall author only gets into the driver's seat with all sorts of contortions, threading his legs around the steering "wheel".

Behind it you can see a large display for driving-related information. To the right, another screen leans towards the driver. This does not distinguish the study from other modern cars. In the wide center console, which bears the diamond pattern typical of the brand, there are recesses for window regulators and other switches.

All systems run individually in a demo mode, nothing can be tried out. Here, too, it is clear: the DS E-Tense Performance is a finger exercise by the designers. At least for now.


With the E-Tense Performance, DS outlines a glimpse of the future - and it's electric. So it's no wonder that the know-how from the Formula E department is used for the development and the look of future models is presented with an expressive design.The front design in particular should soon be seen in this form on series models. Under the body, however, it is not the Formula E technology with brute force that is used, but large-scale production technology from the Stellantis Group in the form of specified platforms.
