Costs and real consumption: Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC+

The new SL wants to drive more dynamically than all its predecessors combined, while at the same time offering a high level of everyday usability. That's what it costs in everyday life. And that's how much he uses.

"The SL wants to be more of a sports car than ever? Catch it. No one has driven more agile so far, not even remotely. And: He pulls his driver along. On the other hand, the Mercedes wipes him out with a few small details." That is the conclusion of Test editor Jens Dralle. You can find out here how the AMG Roadster performs in terms of fuel consumption and running costs. By the way: You can find the complete test of the new SL in the current auto motor und sport issue 17/2022.

Our test consumption

The V8 turbo consumed 13.5 l/100 km during our test - exactly one liter more than the WLTP specification (12.5 l/100 km). Filled up with Super Plus, the costs total 25.31 euros over the standard distance. If the driver taps into the sporty potential of the 1,904 kg fabric roof roadster, consumption increases to 15.9 l/100 km, which costs 29.81 euros at the petrol station. If you use the accelerator pedal cautiously, consumption can be reduced to less than 10 liters: 9.7 l/100 km correspond to fuel costs of 18.19 euros. The commuter consumption is three tenths higher than the average test consumption. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken (07/29/2022 /Super Plus: 1.875 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

The annual vehicle tax for the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC+ is 688 euros. According to Allianz Direct, liability insurance costs 334 euros per year. 243 euros are due for partial casco protection. If you upgrade to fully comprehensive insurance, you have to pay 2,240 euros. The monthly maintenance costs therefore amount to 574 euros with a mileage of 15,000 kilometers per year. At 30,000 kilometers, this value increases to 1,063 euros per month. We have disregarded the loss in value in this balance sheet.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption runs. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted by the "tank up more" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz Direct, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (accident-free/15,000 km per year/resident in the postcode area 70174/not under 21/partner driver older than 25 years).

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC+ with 585 hp four-liter eight-cylinder turbo petrol engine costs at least 187,098 euros and consumes an average of 13.5 liters of Super Plus, which results in fuel costs of 25.31 euros per 100 kilometers. The monthly maintenance costs are 574 euros with an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If this increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 1,063 euros.
