Costs and real consumption: BMW M5 CS

The BMW M5 CS combines the space and comfort of a touring sedan with the power of a sports car. Where do the maintenance and operating costs fall into this mixed situation?

Even 1,800 revolutions per minute are enough for the BMW M5 CS to swing its torque hammer at full power. 750 Newton meters press over all four wheels on the pathetic asphalt. The V8 turbo draws a total of 635 hp from a displacement of 4.4 liters and puts many sports cars in the shade. A circumstance that also affects efficiency and costs? After all, the Bavarian is anything but a lightweight with more than 1.8 tons.

Our test consumption

According to BMW, the average consumption in the WLTP cycle is 11.3 liters per 100 kilometers. However, the test consumption determined by us is 12.4 liters. Accordingly, 100 kilometers at the Super Plus pump cost 21.08 euros. A gentle gas foot reduces consumption to 9.1 liters per 100 kilometers, even below the 10 mark. If the BMW M5 CS unleashes sporting ambitions in its driver, the thirst rises to 15.5 liters. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (07/23/2021 /Super Plus: 1.699 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

In eco mode, the fuel costs for 100 kilometers are 15.47 euros, sporty drivers pay 26.35 euros for the same distance. The annual vehicle tax is 452 euros. Liability insurance costs you 518 euros per year, partial and fully comprehensive insurance add up to 394 and 1,652 euros respectively. If you drive 15,000 kilometers a year, you can expect monthly operating costs of 521 euros. If you drive twice as much, you pay 932 euros a month. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption drives. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and comprehensive insurance with Allianz, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance.

Conclusion

In the auto motor and sport test consumption, the 180,400 euro BMW M5 CS with 635 hp ends up with an average value of 12.4 liters Super Plus per 100 kilometers. The fuel costs over this distance are therefore 21.08 euros. The monthly maintenance costs are 521 euros (15,000 km annual mileage) or 932 euros (30,000 km annual mileage).
