He is already the class nerd. The one that everyone points to when it comes to good workmanship, high safety and a convincing chassis for the little ones: The VW Up did not only have two comparison tests with a uto in its first six months motor und sport , but won over 8,000 buyers in the first quarter of 2012. The Fiat brothers Panda and 500 managed that too - but only together.

What the happiness of the young VW Up ? The current market launch of the Seat Mii and the Skoda Citigo - his twin brothers, who tumble off the Skoda assembly line with him in Bratislava, Slovakia and will roll to dealerships in the coming days. They look very similar, except for a few details on the front and rear. With the widest radiator grille and the clearest lines, the Skoda Citigo is the most conservative in the parking lot. Seat has given its Mii a more angular headlight and front protection design, which makes it look the most striking in this trio.

VW Up with a glass tailgate

There, where they other people wearing a classic radiator grille sits at the VW Up a stately VW emblem; underneath, a laughing mouth is punched into his bumper. In addition, the two-door car has angled rear side windows that make the dwarf appear sportier. He is also the only one allowed to carry the completely glass tailgate.

And inside? Know one, know everyone. The shape of the dashboard, the seat position, the height of the gear lever, the size of the sun visors and the glove compartment, the buttons on the center console, the door panels, the handbrake lever ... no differences can be seen. The two doors open wide enough, you can comfortably climb into the first row, find the seat adjustment cumbersome and miss the height-adjustable headrests because the existing ones are firmly connected to the front seats.

The radio and air conditioning are operated by all three of the same - and equally good. Provided you have these extras on board: A CD radio including MP3 function costs at Skoda 295 euros, with Seat 300 and with VW 355 euros. In combination with air conditioning, the prices rise - for the Skoda to 850 euros and for the VW Up to 895 euros. Seat charges 850 euros for the cooled air, but leaves out the radio.

Seat Mii is also chic for an extra charge

A look at the speedometer reveals further differences. Each manufacturer chooses a different type of lettering and illuminates the cockpit in a different color. If you want a little chic, you have to Up or Mii order in the most expensive equipment line. Then part of the cockpit shines in black, white or anthracite.

In order to get to the two rear seats without dislocations, the 3.50 meter rear doors are recommended for small cars, especially since they only cost 475 euros extra . For this price, however, there are only vent windows for ventilation instead of the classic recessed windows.

The question of the best engine is quickly answered: There is only one three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 60 or 75 hp. Both versions have a rumbling idle in common, which is transferred to the body. The weaker expansion stage is sufficient for city operation, even if its small starting weakness is impractical here. The 75 PS version doesn't suffer from this, with sufficient power it pulls VW Up, Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo forward. The grumpy engine sound is available to all, as is a neatly stepped five-speed manual transmission. Those who like to do without a clutch pedal have to be patient for a few more months, then a sequential transmission is always available.

The comfort reserves of the three are quickly used up

On our first family outing, the VW Up filtered the road noise best, which may have been due to the very good equipment of the car. In terms of suspension comfort, despite its optional 16-inch aluminum wheels, it performed just as well as the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo (both on 15-inch models). However, the dwarves cannot perform miracles in this discipline - their comfort reserves are used up faster on mogul slopes and larger potholes than at Polo & Co.

If you keep this in mind, you are mostly out and about in the city, in small gaps have to park and don't want to burst into tears while refueling, the trio should take a look. Which? Since there is complete equality in terms of technology, taste can decide: The Seat Mii is angular on the outside and as a basic version it is particularly cheap - but also sparsely furnished. Skoda takes a more conservative approach, the Citigo is not as distinctive, but has a little more equipment on board in the basic version; what the 560 euro surcharge for the Seat explained. The VW Up is the most independent and expensive - 960 euros more than the basic Mii. But it is also best equipped and is predicted to have the lowest depreciation. Typically small nerd.

There are already other triplets in this segment - what is remarkable about the Skoda Citigo, Seat Mii and VW Up is their comfortable nature and their comparatively good workmanship. Anyone who searches without a pre-defined brand feeling and looks at the money will end up at Seat. It is a few hundred euros cheaper than the Skoda. The Up may cost more than its brothers at the beginning, but it has the lowest predicted depreciation - that too can be decisive. On our first tour, the three of them didn't take any driving action.
