M sometimes, at parties, it happens to you, that you spend a quarter of an hour or two in the kitchen, only to realize that most of the others have already left and that no one is there for the three sheets of pizza you just pulled out of the oven.

The party with the small station wagons also seems to be dissolving. There was: the Polo Variant, but only one generation, then the Fiat Palio Weekend, which was not unjustifiably displaced, and an Opel Corsa B Caravan, from 1997 to 2001 and never with us, and at Peugeot the crossoverige 2008 replaced the 207 SW. Now that the new Renault Clio Grandtour is hurrying up, it only encounters the corporate cousins Skoda Fabia Combi and Seat Ibiza ST - and the Lada Kalina station wagon hugs around there in the corner.

Renault Clio Grandtour offers a lot of space

The small estate car segment may now have degenerated into a niche - the Renault Clio Grandtour really mixes it up. While the normal hatchback ends a bit abruptly, the 20.4 centimeter longer station wagon rear increases the elegance of the car. Whereby the - let's call them prominently modeled - flanks, the drawn-in window line and the roofline, which is already gently sloping at the level of the B-pillar, hardly diminish the Renault Clio Grandtour's talent for transport. With 443 to 1,380 liters, it packs between 143 and 234 liters more luggage than the hatchback. To do this, a fold-away intermediate floor bridges the inner edge of the cargo space. It is sufficient to fold down the asymmetrically split rear seat back to get a flat loading area in the Renault Clio Grandtour. If the backrest of the front passenger seat is flat (standard from Dynamique), the maximum loading length increases from 1.62 to 2.48 meters - for transporting surfboards, grandfather clocks, double basses or basketball players in a lying position.

Powerful diesel, powerful infotainment system

Although they can now also endure sitting in the rear of the Renault Clio Grandtour . While in the normal Clio the flat roof puts a lot of pressure on the headroom at the rear, there is enough space for adults in the station wagon. The fact that it is also easier to see because of the larger side windows is one of the other pluses of the Renault Clio Grandtour, whose 50 extra kilos are not noticeable when driving compared to the hatchback.

The 90 hp diesel starts boldly in the Renault Clio Grandtour, draws stocky, remains cultivated and should be just as economical as in the normal Clio. Because it is allowed to load properly, the familiar chassis setup remains, which bounces comfortably, but does some cornering.

And then there is the new R-Link infotainment. This means that the Renault Clio Grandtour is up to date and can make calls, navigate, email and download applications. But above all, it convinces everyone who wants to invite. Even a combination surcharge of EUR 1,000 does not change the fact that the Renault Clio Grandtour is a good party.
