A It is gradually becoming difficult for automakers to get involved in the booming small car -Segment stand out from the competition. Expensive high-tech extras? Not in a segment in which a price difference of 300 euros can make a decision on the purchase. Fancy design? Sure, but the car should stay practical, if you please.

Peugeot tries it with the new 208 anyway with the styling and wraps the cloak of practicality over it. In the interior, the designers simply moved an instrument panel fitted with traditional analog displays up a bit and reduced the steering wheel to a sports car level. What for? The French are expecting an effect similar to that of a head-up display, only cheaper.

There is hardly any new cockpit concept on

And how does it feel? Actually hardly any different than with all the others, because whether the view falls above or below the upper half of the steering wheel rim on the speedometer and tachometer soon turns out to be irrelevant. Much more important: the readability of the scales. And the digits in the Peugeot 208 should like to be drawn a little clearer.

The optional seven-inch touchscreen display slides high so that the infotainment system is easy to operate - when did that become last wrote about a Peugeot? Even with the cult great grandpa of the 208, the 205, the cassette radio was placed as far down as possible in the center console in order to protect itself as best as possible from being accessed by the occupants they go back, the French, after their successors never quite achieved its nimbus. So the Peugeot 208 shrunk by seven centimeters compared to its predecessor, the wheelbase remained unchanged. Clever furniture backing should make the space a little more airy, especially in the rear, but the progress remains manageable.

Peugeot 208 with 115 hp diesel turns on

In the front, everything fits, too the seats score with comfortable upholstery and pleasant side support. And the driver and co-driver in the Peugeot 208 can really use that, because when it comes to setting up the chassis, high agility was apparently very high in the specifications. The fact that things are going stormy straight ahead is due to the powerful diesel engine of the Peugeot 208. The 1.6-liter engine develops 115 hp and even develops a maximum torque of 285 via overboostNewton meters.

Not right for you? No problem, as an alternative, two more diesel engines or one of five petrol engines can be sunk in the bumpy front of the Peugeot 208, which cover a power range from 68 to 156 hp. But the big HDi unit turns on because it works smoothly, revs up and pulls powerfully. Fittingly: the short, easy-to-use six-speed manual transmission.

Peugeot 208 on average 110 kilograms lighter

Also fitting: the dribbling handling. The Peugeot 208 scurries lively through the winding Alsace, takes even tight turns light-footed and soothingly understeer when exuberant. It is not that Peugeot has revolutionized chassis technology - keyword price-sensitive segment - but the compact was given an effective diet. The series has lost an average of 110 kilograms - even half would be a step forward.

In the papers, the test car only shows 1.1 tons, and it doesn't feel like much more. Well, the mounted 17-inch wheels certainly don't hurt the agility either. The comfort does, however, the 208 rolls with stiff legs over mottled roads. Apparently, Peugeot no longer wants to stand out from the competition with a supple suspension.
