Three things that you can save yourself in addition to high fuel costs if you use one of these acquire both cars. First, collect loyalty points from oil companies - the promotions will be over before you have even half the points you need. Second, remember the tank attendant's name - even if you introduce yourself politely, he'll have forgotten you by the time you make one of your next, rare visits. Third: look out for the cheapest gas pump even when the tank is half empty, as the fuel at P eugeot is enough for 470 kilometers and for the Seat 420 kilometers.

Peugeot 207 and Seat Ibiza significantly exceed the standard consumption

Because smaller measures are sufficient to achieve standard consumption of 3.7 ( Seat ) and 3.8 liters of diesel /100 km to achieve: lowered bodies, tires with low rolling resistance, Dispensing with the spare wheel, optimized engine controls, a few aerodynamic aids such as a roof spoiler, closed radiator grille and large wheel covers on the Seat or underbody paneling on the Peugeot , plus a particularly long five-speed gearbox. On the other hand, both do without a start-stop system.

Because nobody drives the way the NEDC cycle prescribes, both cars clearly exceed their standard specifications - the Ibiza at 43, the Peugeot 207 by 40 percent. The small cars with a test consumption of 5.3 liters /100 km each are still among the particularly economical cars. But the fact that values well below the five-liter limit are difficult to achieve in practice is disappointing. After all, Peugeot and Seat pay dearly for the promise of the highest economy. The 207 99g (yes, they actually call it that) costs 200 euros more than the comparable equipment version Tendance. Because with the 99g that with the Tendancestandard and indispensable ESP is charged extra at 460 euros, the actual difference is 660 euros. Doesn't sound like a lot, but even according to the optimistic standard values, the economy version only got the money back after 82,500 kilometers thanks to the 0.7 L /100 km lower consumption.

The 1.6-liter diesel from VW Polo, Golf and Passat

works in the Seat Ibiza The comparison is more difficult with the Ibiza Econetic. It is based on the equipment version Reference, which is no longer available with the 1.4-liter pump-nozzle three-cylinder. Instead, the Spaniards rely on the VW Polo , Golf and Passat well-known 1.6-liter common-rail four-cylinder. It is only 100 euros more expensive and, despite ten HP more, only has a small consumption disadvantage with 0.5 L /100 km. However, lower internal friction and a weight advantage speak in favor of the three-cylinder Ecomotive, which has been trimmed for maximum economy - a 19.5: 1 highly compressed compression-ignition engine that rightly bears the name explosion engine. At no point does it conceal the brutality with which the fuel injected by separate pump-nozzle units self-ignites through compression.

That's why you only get excited pretty much half an hour about the rowdy appearance of the little triplet, only to find out that this characteristic, enterprising growl, which constantly surges into the interior, is actually quite likeable. Which doesn’t change the fact that the Peugeot with its 1.6-liter common-rail diesel offers much better drive comfort. It also rumbles off rough on a cold start, but as soon as it has warmed up, it stays more discreetly in the background with its quiet nailing. On long journeys, the 207 also benefits from the higher output and better torque of the four-cylinder. Ten hp and 20 Nm are not the world, but with them the Peugeot pulls itself up to much more spirited driving performance.

The Peugeot 207 scores with better elasticity than the Seat Ibiza

Its better elasticity in particular makes driving more relaxed, because the engineers packed both of them Cars for the lowest possible consumption in the NEDC cycle, five-speed transmissions with very long ratios. They turn the engines, they leave them after every gear changefall into a deep turbo lag, from which the 207 climbs out more quickly with its extra torque. So the 1,600 mumbles comfortably in the city in a large gear at 50 km /h - with around 1,000 tours, i.e. long before the Garrett turbocharger even thinks about boosting pressure with 1.25 bar. And even when the time comes, the four-cylinder develops its power homogeneously and gently. The Ecomotive, on the other hand, maintains the legacy of the old TDI. It rumbles a bit bitterly in the very low speed range, smoldering tiredly up to 1,800 rpm, and then puffing up a short, fiery temperament storm with 1.15 bar boost pressure.

So it doesn't hurt to change gears in the Ibiza - it's also not annoying, because of its short-range transmission, which can be shifted much more precisely than the shaky Peugeot box. Due to its sportier character, which is supported by its precise and feedback-intensive steering, the seat's suspension setting, which has been significantly tightened due to the lowering, is much less disturbing than on the 207.

The Seat Ibiza takes corners more agile than the Peugeot 207

Despite its narrower tires, the Ibiza curves more agile and neutral on winding streets. The Peugeot is not, its low-feedback steering speaks too inharmoniously. The likewise bitterly tuned and weakly absorbent suspension bothers the French more, because in itself he feels obliged to comfort, lets his passengers get in more comfortably and sit less crowded than the Ibiza. This accommodates pilots and co. On cuddly seats that require intensive lateral support. But its shape reduces the space available - flat A-pillars at the front and the lower roof in the rear create a feeling of space. With its better clarity and variability, including the split-foldable rear seat, the 207 secures further points - which it loses again immediately because of its poorer seats.

The Ibiza also has a slight advantage when it comes to operation - toasters are often a bigger challenge, but sometimes also offer a more beautiful sight. Because the Seat interior designers preferred to furnish the interior with dark hard plastic, which looks solidly crafted, but is a bit poor compared to the more elegantly decorated, only slightly more casually processed Peugeot.

The Peugeot 207 does not offer ESP as standard, the Ibiza does without head airbags

This also applies to the equipment of the Ibiza. Because, unlike the Peugeot, which only lacks ESP and radio, it comes as standard without side head airbags, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and air conditioning, its price advantage is reduced to 590 euros. Whoever invests it, gets with the Peugeot 207 99g a more refined, practical, spacious and better motorized small car. If you like the more dynamic and solid Ibiza, you can get this money - and with it even a fourth thing -save.
