Costs and real consumption: Peugeot 205 GTI (1990)

The Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9, which cost DM 25,940 in 1990, comes for a consumption check.

Its story begins in 1976, when Peugeot started the M24 project. It's about more than the successor to the 204, namely: everything. Because the finances are badly imbalanced in the French. If the new small car flops, they have to close up shop. They don't have to, because from February 24, 1983 to December 31, 1998, Peugeot built 5.278 million 205s - each held together by 2,471 spot welds.,

Because it's France, the rescue team can't do without elegance and speed. So the 205 is not only perhaps the most beautiful of all small cars - for a long time it was said that Pininfarina was responsible for the design, later it was said that it was Peugeot's own La Garenne stylistic department headed by Gérard Welter - but also the wildest GTI. It started in February 1984 as the 1600 with 105 hp, in 1986 the 1900 was added, which only started with 128 hp, ramped up with a 120 hp cat from 1988 and was now cooling off at the gas station in Hockenheim with a faint ticking sound. And what about the fuel and maintenance costs?

Our test consumption

In 1990, Peugeot specified a DIN standard consumption of 6.3 liters at Tempo 90, 8.2 liters at 100 km/h and 8.1 liters Super in the city for the 205 GTI . He moves away from this value in everyday life. We have determined an average consumption of 9.6 liters, which causes fuel costs of 17.57 euros per 100 kilometers. On the Eco lap, the Peugeot consumed 7.0 liters while consuming 9.8 liters on the commuter route. If the Peugeot was moved in a sporty manner, consumption rose to 11.1 liters. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (06/29/2022 /Super: 1.83 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

If you drive as resource-efficiently as we do on our eco tour, you reduce the fuel costs for 100 kilometers to 12.81 euros. The rather violent gait resulted in a sum of 20.31 euros. The motor vehicle tax costs 302 euros per year for the Peugeot (with an H license plate 191 euros), the liability insurance is 371 euros. Partial and fully comprehensive insurance cost an additional 61 and 439 euros respectively. Monthly maintenance costs of 245 euros are paid by those who drive the Peugeot 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage is doubled, the sum increases to 438 euros. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption runs. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the Eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and comprehensive insurance with Allianz including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance.

Conclusion

In the auto motor und sport test consumption, the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 with 120 hp, which cost DM 25,940 in 1990, ended up with an average value of 9.6 liters Super per 100 kilometers. This means that the fuel costs over this distance are 17.57 euros. The monthly maintenance costs are 245 euros (15,000 km annual mileage) or 438 euros (30,000 km annual mileage).
