E s was once again a VLN race, that was determined by tactics. After bright sunshine on Friday, the Eifel was in a rather bad mood on race day. The constant rain turned the second VLN run into a tire lottery.

Weather frogs at an advantage

Even at the start, those who had been watching the sky carefully benefited. At first the Bentley from HTP Motorsport (Christian Menzel /Lance-David Arnold /Guy Smith), who was on pole, fought with the Rowe-Mercedes and the Phoenix-Audi. After just one lap, the first cars in the leading group came to the pits to switch from rain tires to slicks.

The lead kept changing. Around two and a half hours after the start, the cards were reshuffled due to heavy rain again. Christopher Mies and Nico Müller finally dominated the final phase of the race in the new Audi R8 from WRT, ahead of teammates Pierre Kaffer and Laurens Vanthoor.

Double victory for WRT

'We were very lucky with them right tires, 'said Mies. 'Actually we should have started on slicks, too. Just because we won this race doesn't mean anything for the 24h race. I also think BMW is strong, Mercedes is well-engineered and Bentley will certainly be interested in how things are done Durability is set up. '

The sister car rolled over the finish line, 1.27.235 minutes behind. 'We chose the right strategy and set off on slicks,' said Kaffer. 'I handed over to Laurens in first place, but a carbon fiber part gave us a flat tire. That made the difference.'

Behind the Audi duo, Thomas Jäger's Rowe SLS, Christian, decided Hohenadel, Klaus Graf and Nico Bastian the duel for the last place on the podium in the battle with Bentley for themselves. 'We did everything right strategically,' said Jäger. 'The SLS is good in the rain, but we didn't stand a chance against Audi's performance in the rain. Something was clearly missing in the lap times. However, the Audi is also a newly developed car.'

Nissan after an accident back

The two BMW Z4s from Marc VDS follow in fifth and sixth in front of the Wochenspiegel-Porsche from Manthey Racing. Eighth place went to the Black Falcon Mercedes, which was one of the favorites at the beginning, but had to make a long pit stop in the meantime. Thebest Cup Porsche landed in ninth position in front of the Audi R8 of the Audi race experience.

Nissan also reported back on the Nordschleife with the RJN team. Four weeks ago, Jann Mardenborough's GT-R took off at the first VLN run at the Quiddelbacher Höhe, fatally injuring a spectator. The decision to return to the second race was made shortly before the event. With the drivers Michael Krumm, Alex Buncombe, Lucas Ordonez and Kazuyoshi Hoshino, they drove an inconspicuous race in black mourning livery and finished in eleventh place.

Many technical defects

Numerous GT3 cars that were contenders for victory had to give up prematurely. This included, for example, the Frikadelli Porsche with a defective drive shaft. The Falken-Porsche also ran aground with technical problems in the Hedwigshöhe area. The Haribo SLS was also loaded into the van before the end of the race.

Aston Martin and Phoenix were hit twice as hard. The Bilstein Aston came into the pits with a destroyed front, the car of Mathias Lauda, Richie Stanaway and Jonny Adam had a technical defect. Apparently there was a problem with the fueling system at Phoenix.
