
C arlos Sainz continues there at the Dakar where he left off last year. Also on the second stage over 764 kilometers from Córdoba to San Miguel (Argentina) the Spaniard in his Race Touareg was unbeatable and extended his lead to 3:05 minutes on BMW competitor Stéphane Peterhansel.
Al-Attiyah is catching up
'That was an excellent day for Volkswagen,' said VW Motorsport Director Kris Nissen after the 19th Dakar day win at Sainz. The Spaniard wasn't the only fast Touareg on Monday.
In the rain, Berlin's Timo Gottschalk and his driver Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar) claimed their third place on the third leg of the day. In the second VW Touareg, the duo came within 14 seconds of Peterhansel. Behind them were their team mates Dirk von Zitzewitz (Karlshof) and his South African driver Giniel de Villiers, 10:49 minutes behind.
Mark Miller falls far behind
The Volkswagen The team also had to take a slight blow. The American Mark Miller, who was fourth on Sunday, fell more than 40 minutes behind in the overall standings after a severe slip in the first section.
From a German perspective, the seven-time German rally champion Matthias Kahle made positive headlines in his fast buggy. The Saxon came in twelfth place overall as the fastest two-wheeler. His deficit on the top: 43:45 minutes.
