D he name Stefan Bellof has in many racing fans Germany still has a special sound. Even before Michael Schumacher, the blond from Gießen sparked a real motorsport fever in Germany. With the endurance world championship title in 1984 and promising Formula 1 outings, Bellof had a great racing career ahead of him, but it ended much too early on September 1, 1985 in Spa-Francorchamps.

Bellof was thrown off the track in a duel with Jacky Ickx in the Eau Rouge and died on the spot. The Porsche 956 driver had no chance. The German racing scene took a long time to recover from this shock. Because of his down-to-earth manner and his incredible talent, 'full throttle' Bellof became a legend despite his short career.

Bernhard with a helmet in Bellof design

To commemorate the fast German Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard has come up with a special campaign to keep it upright. 30 years after the accident of his predecessor, the Saarland native will start with the helmet design from Bellof at the WEC race in Spa-Francorchamps.

Jens Munser, who among other things also has the helmets of Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel designed and painted Bernhard's head protection in the striking black, red and yellow pattern that many fans still remember well.

Appreciation from driver to driver

Bernhard has a special relationship with Bellof. At the award ceremony of the Stefan Bellof Memorial Race in Oppenrod in 1995, Homburg's father got to know Georg Bellof. He has had a friendship with Bellof's then partner Angelika Langner, who incidentally designed the original helmet design.

'I got into conversation with Georg Bellof after the race, it was Stefans' 10th anniversary Accident. The story of Stefan's career made a great impression on me then as now, 'said Bernhard. 'For me it is a bow to the extraordinary racing driver Stefan Bellof and I would like to commemorate his achievements on the occasion of the 30th anniversary - as an appreciation from driver to driver. He was a thoroughbred racer and still deserves full respect today.' /p>
