D as The 2016 edition of the 24h Race in Daytona once again had a lot of drama and suspense to offer. In the battle for overall victory, the spectacular DeltaWing had initially been in the lead for a long time. But after 119 laps the unusual car crashed into a damaged LMPC Oreca in turn 1.

First LMP2 victory in the 24h race by Daytona

The Shank-Ligier could not be happy about the top for long either. After 6 hours the engine exploded without warning. The winners in the ESM Ligier did not come over the distance without problems either. It was mainly thanks to the Brazilian Pipo Derani that a one-lap deficit could still be made up.

The ESM-Ligier finally crossed the line after 24 hours with a lead of 26.1 seconds. The two Corvette Daytona prototypes from WTR (Taylor, Taylor, Angelelli and Barrichello) and VisitFlorida (Dalziel, Goossens, Hunter-Reay) came in second and third. After 10 Daytona prototype victories in a row, an LMP2 vehicle won for the first time.

Corvette photo finish in GTLM class

In the GTLM class things got even more dramatic. In the internal Corvette duel, Gavin, Milner and Fässler prevailed after 24 hours in the photo finish with 0.034 seconds against teammates Garcia, Rockenfeller and Magnussen. The Porsche 911 trio Bamber, Makowiecki, Christens landed in 3rd place.

Ford's eagerly anticipated comeback was disappointing. Both GTs were forced into the garage early with transmission problems. There was also light and shadow on the debut of the BMW M6 GTLM. Lucas Luhr ended up in the gang early with a brake damage. The sister car with Bill Auberlen, Dirk Werner, Augusto Farfus and Bruno Spengler came in 5th behind the Ferrari GTE from Scuderia Corse.

Audi wins GTD despite lack of fuel

It was not much less dramatic in the GTD class. René Rast, Andy Lally, John Potter and Marco Seefried ensured the second Audi GT class win at Daytona after 2013. In order to save fuel, Rast as the leader had to let the Italian Fabio Babini go in the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 9 minutes before the end of the race.

But the Lambo rolled out a few meters later due to lack of fuel. Rast dragged his Magnus Racing-R8 GT3 with a 3-second lead to the GTD victory. The Black Swan Porsche 911 GT3 with Pappas, Catsburg, Long and Pilgrim came in second. The thirdThe GTD place on the podium was taken by the Riley Viper GT3 with Keating, Robinson, Mosing and Foss at the wheel.
