B MW is with very satisfied with the sales figures for the current M5 generation. No wonder, after all, the power sedan, which has now been provided with its own factory code F90, sells better than its predecessor based on the F10. The conclusion that M GmbH draws from this success is also logical: After the facelift of the entire series, it is providing the M5 and its competition offshoot with a hardcore version: the M5 CS.
sport auto , the partner magazine of auto motor und sport, was able to whisk away the slightly camouflaged BMW M5 CS on a fast lap on the Hockenheim GP circuit. The time: 1.53.6 minutes. For comparison, the M5 Competition reached 1:54.2 minutes on the track. See the complete round in the video here.
Profiled spoiler on the M5 CS
Of course, this presents the optical innovations that also distinguish the modeled brothers: The larger double kidney grille extends deeper , is a little wider than before and appears three-dimensional with the struts arranged in an offset manner. For the CS, it is given a special color along with the side gills. The headlights and taillights are also designed differently; the latter with a black border. The aprons, sills and mirrors have the typical M shape, the spoiler lips on the front apron and on the trunk lid are profiled. The plastic strips in the upper area of the rear wheel arches, which we already know from the M8 Gran Coupé, are also striking. They are not beautiful, but have to be for licensing reasons. At the rear, the M5 CS will have a generously dimensioned diffuser.
But the look is one thing with a CS model from M GmbH. The question is: what is changing technically? The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 gains 635 hp and is coupled with an eight-speed automatic. The CS stands on 20-inch Pirelli P Zero Corsa wheels with tires of size 275/35 at the front and 285/35 at the rear. An Instagram video now provides first impressions of the new BMW M5 CS of BMW fans Switzerland .
Refined in many areas
There are also changes to the chassis, which add a bit of dynamism to the powerful sedan. In addition, the engineers should re-sharpen the electronics of the rear-heavy four-wheel drive that can be decoupled at the push of a button. The active M limited-slip differential on the rear axle should also be more ambitious. We also expect the track mode, which the M8 already has, among the driving modes. The not exactly opaque rims of the Erlkönig also reveal the carbon-ceramic brake system with gold-colored saddles, which may even be on board at no extra charge.
The innovations of the facelifted 5 Series are also moving into the interior. That means: Android Auto is also running on the larger infotainment display for the first time. The M8 should be the inspiration for the M-specific changes. And it has a new set of buttons that can be used to directly influence driving behavior. In addition, two-tone sports seats with the Nürburgring track logo in the headrests await the driver and front passenger.
We expect the new BMW M5 CS to be launched relatively early in 2021. And the prices? In view of the fact that the M5 Competition of the pre-facelift model already costs 128,900 euros, little should go below 150,000 euros.
