Costs and real consumption: BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé M Sport

The BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé M Sport, which costs 63,200 euros, is ready for a consumption check.

The navigation monitor and operation via iDrive as well as good voice recognition are okay, but what's gathered behind the steering wheel in dark colors and opposite scales for the speedometer and engine speed is a slap in the face for old BMW fans . You could have programmed at least a black and white round clock view called "Classic" for them, but they probably didn't have the courage to do so. The 4-series has also gone backwards with the assistants: although they work well and are numerous, the lane departure warning system, which is annoying from all manufacturers, has to be laboriously deactivated in several steps in the new Gran Coupé. But what about the fuel and maintenance costs?

Our test consumption

BMW specifies a WLTP standard consumption of 5.6 liters of diesel for the 420d xDrive Gran Coupé M Sport. He distances himself from this value in everyday life; we have determined an average consumption of 7.0 liters, which causes fuel costs of 10.64 euros per 100 kilometers. On the Eco lap, the BMW consumed just 5.0 liters, while it consumed 7.1 liters on the commuter route. If the BMW was moved in a sporty manner, consumption rose to 8.8 liters. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (08.12.2021 /diesel: 1.52 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

If you drive as resource-efficiently as we do on our eco tour, you reduce the fuel costs for 100 kilometers to 7.60 euros. A rather violent gait results in a total of 13.38 euros. According to Allianz Direct , the vehicle tax costs 301 euros per year for the BMW, the liability insurance 491 euros. Partial and fully comprehensive insurance cost an additional 254 and 1,089 euros respectively. Monthly maintenance costs of 328 euros are paid by those who drive the BMW 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage is double, the sum increases to 564 euros. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption runs. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, insurance costs with no-claims class SF12 for liability and comprehensive insurance with Allianz including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance.

Conclusion

In the auto motor and sport test consumption, the 63,200-euro BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupé M Sport with 190 hp ended up with an average value of 7.0 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. The fuel costs for this distance are thus 10.64 euros. The monthly maintenance costs are 328 euros (15,000 km annual mileage) or 564 euros (30,000 km annual mileage).
