Costs and real consumption: BMW 330i xDrive M Sport

The 3 Series comes up for a cost check with a 258 hp two-liter turbo petrol engine. How expensive is it in everyday life – and what does it consume? We found out.

The BMW 330i convinces with brilliance in terms of dynamics, handling and operation. This is the conclusion of test editor Sebastian Renz. For this he gives up all comfort ambitions and prefers to spoil himself with the sovereign drive. But at what everyday costs? Here is our calculation.

Our test consumption

The 258 hp two-liter, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine treats itself to 8.4 liters of Super per 100 kilometers in the test. This corresponds exactly to our commuter consumption measurement and is a whopping 1.7 liters above the WLTP specification. This results in fuel costs of 14.53 euros over this distance. On the economically driven eco round, the mid-size sedan is frugal: Round six liters ran through the combustion chambers. The costs therefore amount to 10.38 euros. If the 330i moves sporty, his thirst increases to 10.7 liters. The costs are then 18.51 euros. These are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (20.10.2021 /Super: 1.739 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

A vehicle tax of 171 euros per year is due for the BMW 330i xDrive M Sport. According to Allianz Direct , liability insurance costs 283 euros in the same period. The insurer offers the partially comprehensive upgrade for an additional 390 euros. Anyone who tops up with fully comprehensive insurance pays an extra 753 euros. The monthly maintenance costs add up to 319 euros if the BMW is used 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage doubles, the value jumps to 575 euros. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption drives. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz Direct, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (accident-free/15,000 km per year/resident in the postcode area 70174/not under 21/partner driver older than 25 years).

Conclusion

The BMW 330i xDrive with 258 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine costs at least 60,530 euros and consumes an average of 8.4 liters, which results in fuel costs of 14.53 euros per 100 kilometers. The monthly maintenance costs are 319 euros for an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If this increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 575 euros.
