Costs and real consumption: BMW Alpina D5 S

Massive power, torque and dynamics - but can the BMW Alpina D5 S with its six-cylinder diesel also be efficient?

Alpina turns the current BMW 5 Series into the D5 S. Under the hood of the refined Bavaria: a 408 hp six-cylinder diesel with a massive 800 Newton meters of maximum torque. This enables the Alpina to reach a speed of 200 km/h from a standing start in 16.7 seconds. Values that speak for sovereign operation on speed limit-exempt motorways. But how confident is the owner when it comes to everyday costs?

Our test consumption

Alpina states the average consumption in the WLTP cycle as 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers. In the test, the D5 S can almost meet this value and comes to 8.7 liters. At the gas station after 100 kilometers you have to pay 11.75 euros. The frugal driver reduces consumption to 6.7 liters, the sporty driver increases it to 10.9 liters. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (07/26/2021 /diesel: 1.349 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

In eco mode, the fuel costs for 100 kilometers are still below the 10 mark at 9.05 euros. Sporty drivers come to 14.72 euros for the same distance. The state would like to see an annual vehicle tax of 649 euros for the Alpina D5 S. Liability insurance costs you 518 euros a year, partial and fully comprehensive insurance add up to 262 and 980 euros respectively. If you drive 15,000 kilometers a year, you can expect monthly operating costs of 389 euros. If you drive twice as much, you pay 675 euros a month. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption drives. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and comprehensive insurance with Allianz, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance.

Conclusion

In the auto motor and sport test consumption, the 92,500-euro BMW Alpina D5 S with 408 hp ended up with an average value of 8.7 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. This means that the fuel costs over this distance are 11.75 euros. The monthly maintenance costs are 389 euros (15,000 km annual mileage) or 675 euros (30,000 km annual mileage).
