Costs and real consumption: Audi A4 Avant 50 TDI Quattro S line

The Audi A4 Avant 50 TDI Quattro S line, which costs 61,900 euros, is ready for a consumption check.

If you catapult the all-wheel drive A4 away from the brakes under test conditions at full throttle, so to speak, it almost reaches the values of its direct competition. It's different in everyday life, for example when you spontaneously demand propulsion at the intersection: then the Avant struggles to get out of its performance slump; this results in a significant loss of points. However, the Audi cannot rely on an e-boost – although in principle it has a belt starter generator. But the technicians only used it for the sake of efficiency, according to the press department. Well, obviously the competitors are better at this, because the 50 TDI Quattro injects measurably more into the combustion chambers. ,

To be fair, we should mention that the A4 has had to prove itself since 2015 - but with the paid sport differential, it keeps up well with the younger ones in terms of lateral dynamics. Whereby the Avant helps that it distributes the Nm to four wheels. On the negative side, the Quattro's slightly reserved relationship, which is maintained by the chassis and body. Irrespective of this, the Audi initially sniffs bumps like a good pinch of snuff; until he is loaded and challenged. Its adaptive shock absorbers react defiantly to this. And what about the fuel and maintenance costs?

Our test consumption

Audi specifies a WLTP consumption of 7.1 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers for the A4 Avant 50 TDI Quattro S line. He moves away from this value in everyday life. We have determined an average consumption of 7.8 liters, which causes fuel costs of 13.26 euros per 100 kilometers. On the eco lap, the Audi consumed 6.0 liters while consuming 7.9 liters on the commuter route. If the Audi was moved in a sporty manner, consumption rose to 9.3 liters. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal refuel more (December 22, 2022 /diesel: 1.70 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

If you drive as resource-efficiently as we do on our eco tour, you reduce the fuel costs for 100 kilometers to 10.20 euros. The rather violent gait resulted in a sum of 15.81 euros. The vehicle tax costs 497 euros per year for the Audi, the liability insurance is 409 euros. Partial and fully comprehensive insurance cost an additional 179 and 869 euros respectively. Monthly maintenance costs of 358 euros are paid by those who drive the Audi 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage is double, the sum increases to 631 euros. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption runs. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the Eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The basis for the calculation is the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance. ,

Conclusion

In the auto motor und sport test consumption, the 61,900 euro Audi A4 Avant 50 TDI Quattro S line with 286 hp ended up with an average value of 7.8 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. This means that the fuel costs over this distance are 13.26 euros. The monthly maintenance costs are 358 euros (15,000 km annual mileage) or 631 euros (30,000 km annual mileage).
