W he already in Europe for the new S6 and S7 is relying exclusively on diesel as the drive source for the new S5. In many markets outside Europe, Audi offers the S5 models with the 3.0 TFSI. The turbo-charged direct-injection petrol engine develops 354 hp and delivers 500 Nm of torque from 1,370 to 4,500 rpm. The petrol S5 also generally comes with all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic.

Diesel with electric compressor

But back to Europe. The three-liter V6 TDI, which is used in the S5 Coupé and S5 Sportback, uses a 48-volt electrical system and an electrically driven compressor as well as a belt starter generator as the heart of the mild hybrid system with a maximum Recuperation power of up to 8 kW. The performance of the diesel engine is 347 hp, the maximum torque is specified with 700 Nm. With standard consumption, the diesel should get by with 6.2 liters.

There is still plenty of driving dynamics. The six-cylinder diesel engine takes the S5 Coupé from standstill to 100 km /h in 4.8 seconds and the S5 Sportback in 4.9 seconds. The electronically limited top speed is 250 km /h. The power transmission of the new S5 TDI is based on all-wheel drive with a center differential and an eight-speed automatic. A sport differential is available as an option.

The standard equipment of the Audi S5 TDI includes a specially tuned sport suspension and newly tuned dynamic steering. The adaptive chassis costs extra. 18-inch wheels with 245/40 tires are standard on the S5 Coupé and S5 Sportback. On request, there are 19-inch models with 255/35 series tires. Audi Sport provides the largest wheels for the two S5 TDI models: 20-inch diameter with 265/30 tires. The brakes are correspondingly large and powerful. The ventilated discs on the front axle have a diameter of 375 millimeters. Black (optionally red) painted six-piston fixed calipers with S lettering take them into the pliers.

Discreetly independent look

The S5 can also stand out visually from the normal A5. The exterior mirrors have aluminum-look housings, the side skirts are still on display, the single-frame grille has double, plastic-shaped aluminum struts, LED headlights and LED taillights with dynamic indicators are standard, and there are also chrome-plated double tailpipes and new aprons on the front and rear Heck.

The interior of the S5 is dominated by black. Sports seats are standard. There are also illuminated door sill strips, a leather sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedal covers, and aluminum applications as well as lots of S logos.

The Audi S5 models with TDI drive will hit the European market from May 2019. For the S5 Coupé TDI and S5 Sportback TDI, the base price in Germany is 65,300 euros.
